Well, you just moved the goalposts. You specifically said traditional powerhouse. What's more "traditional" than currently 6 straight Sweet 16's (a record, btw)? High school kids only know Gonzaga as a traditional powerhouse.

Who is "you", you realize you didn't quote the same person, right?

Just my two cents

I do think this Gonzaga team despite everything that has gone down this season should go down as one of the best teams at least in recent memory.

But their fanbase IMO is getting a bit annoying. To use their success as some kind of sign to bash Cal or UK as a whole is.........well bizzare.

Lol, you know as well as I do, this isn't just Gonzaga fans pumping Gonzaga..

Yes, that's what people who haven't won a title yet are left to brag about: consecutive sweet 16s. 8 titles man, Eight. You can't win this debate. You're out-of your depth.
I guess you just can't handle facts, and by the way I was watching Kentucky Basketball before you were borned and have watched 100 Kentucky games for every one you have. It is these stupid posts on this board that makes it harder and harder to like the Cats. The arrogance and stupidity here is sickening. It is almost as sickening as players kneeling for the National Anthem.

They DID lose to SDSU and BYU on the road in recent years. I think Gonzaga likely rolls through this conference this year anyways.. but you never know. They seemingly drop 1 or 2 road games most years to these crappier teams.
I don’t think they would’ve dropped any in the SEC OR PAC 12 much less the WCC this team seems to be on another level from prior seasons. But I guess anything can happen. I won’t hold it against them too much however.

Right, so presumably many more than 11 have gone undefeated in conference but lost to more major teams they scheduled in OOC. Which speaks to it being easier in a weak sauce conference.
Yep. And I’ve never said it wasn’t easier in a weaker conference. My statement was saying it still wasn’t easy to do, regardless of conference, because only 11 teams since 1939 from non power conferences have done it.

I am the only one who has quoted actual facts in this discussion. 6 straight sweet 16s is impressive, yes. 8 national titles is MORE impressive. That isn't arrogance. It certainly isn't stupidity. Using the word "borned" could be, though. Sorry you lack the facts to argue for Gonzaga being a traditional power on a Kentucky message board. I'm not sure what you expected, to be honest. Did you think UK fans would just agree with your every word and bow? I wouldn't expect fans of any team to just yield and agree. Sorry to disappoint you, though. :)

I think that's the argument here.. chances are, a team is going to drop a road game. It's not even so much that the other team was better.. sometimes the crowd and the environment takes you out of your game that night.

I'd say it's a fairly good chance they drop at least 1 game in SEC and Pac12. The odds of a team running through a power conference undefeated, WITH road games, is always going to be low. Flip a coin 8 times, so to speak.

Yep, as I said above, this season will always have an asterisk beside it: the Covid-19 shortened season.

Had they played a few nail biters I would be inclined to agree with you. But they’ve made good teams look bad on neutral courts. We’ll agree to disagree.

So every team, golfer, tennis player, etc get asterisks by their titles this year? I don't get that logic at all.
Why exactly? Does that mean it means less or doesn't count against other seasons? I'm at a loss here as to why this season will be viewed that way?

Yeah I agree.

I mean if Gonzaga runs the table, they will have played 32 games.

I might have a different feeling if the season was drastically reduced. Then it might take something from it. But given the current season, I don't see why there should be an asterisk.

Not that it matters anyways lol. Had UK won a title this season, do you think ANYONE here would care or think it's significance was somewhat lessen? Noway lol. It's the same with the Zags and their fans if they win lol

Raise your hand if you’d be claiming an asterisk belonged by our name if UK was the one threatening a national title and chasing an undefeated season.

now if your hand is up ... put it down. You’re lying.

They beat Kansas, Auburn, Iowa, West Virginia, Virginia, Oklahoma, Creighton this year. Why is it nauseating? This is the best team I have seen in years. COVID shortened season or not. They are the gold standard in CBB right regardless of conference. Shouldn’t make some people so mad to admit it.
“Constant” is the key word here. They are fawned over every year for their 30 win seasons in a conference that is basically trash only to in most years flake out in the tourney. I’m referring less about this team and year than I am previous flame out years but to each their own. Again I don’t hate Gonzaga and DO enjoy their team and coach but would like to see them actually win a tournament before they are anointed. This may be their year. Baylor will be a good challenge.

It simply means it was an easier feat than it would normally be. For Gonzaga, with no road games, it was even easier. Just from a mathematical point of view, it's 8 fewer games. That alone makes it easier. The other reason it was easier is because of the effect it had on teams with young and upcoming players. Usually by March, SOME team that may not have been very good early in the season has had development from freshmen and been able to reach a higher ceiling than teams who returned a bunch of players from the previous year. There were no teams who fit that bill this season. The teams that returned players, especially starters, from last season have been dominant all season and no teams have threatened that. There are multiple reasons this season will have an asterisk beside it.

Now, if you're asking if I would have personally placed an asterisk by a title if it were UK winning it this season, of course not. I'm a UK fan. I wouldn't expect a Gonzaga fan or a UCLA, Baylor, or Houston fans to see it that way, either. But I would expect whoever doesn't win it to see it that way. And really, it doesn't matter how fans prefer see it. It will have an asterisk beside it. It can't be avoided. Does it mean it's less valuable? Perhaps. I would argue that it was easier to achieve.

Agree. If they do go undefeated, I think anytime in the future that a team has a chance going into the tournament and the list is shown, you’ll hear something like, “Gonzaga is the last team to go undefeated in the shortened season of 2021”.

Yep. And I think it's a bigger factor than we realize. Any team that was already going to be great this year (IE Gonzaga) just got a bit of a gift by not having to power through 10-12 road environments. Environments where anything can happen, as we've seen.

If you look at Gonzaga's schedule the last 12 years.. look at their losses and how many of them were conference road games. Or any school. Look at Kentucky. When the place is rocking, it makes it tough to win. You can't just be 5 or 6 points better than your opponent, you often gotta be a LOT better than your opponent.

But the arguments of no road games or shorten seasons are specific to the undefeated record moreso IMO than anything.

There's no road games in the NCAA tournament and you still have to win six games in a row to win a title.

That hasn't changed from year to year.

The regular season is basically to determine seeding. They could have played 100 games. This team was getting a 1 seed regardless.

If we're talking about an undefeated team, this applies. It doesn't apply to the tournament games, of course, but it does apply to regular season games. There were no TRUE road environments this season.

To me it's kinda like the same argument people make of well Gonzaga's record is what it is because they play in a weaker conference.

Well yeah sure that might be the case, but even if they had played in the power conference the record would still have been really good with the possibility of running the table.

Completely disagree. A title is a title. Not Gonzaga's fault about all the other stuff going on.
All manner of sports and titles were won during wars. Natural disasters, etc. It's just kind of sour grapes to me for people to act as if this one deserves some sort of penalty. It's like saying you won but you didn't really win.
They are trucking teams in this tourney.

I was getting ready to make almost an identical post. It may not be rational, but you ever just look at the smug look on someone's face and instantly hate them? These dudes remind me of Duke of old up & down, and it's not because they have a lot of white players either. That guy (kispert), reminds me of Hurley or Laettner. The same smug entitled rich kid arrogance just oozes from him. On top of that they are media darlings, appear to get a lot of very favorable calls (may just be my bias seeing what i want to see). Just can't bring myself to root for them.

It is just funny to me that the things some are saying about Gonzaga (weak conference/easy path to stacking up wins/high seed in the tournament) are the same thing fans from the ACC, B1G, etc have been saying about Kentucky for years. "SEC is weak, UK doesn't have to play more than one or two decent teams in conference, Kentucky is one good BB program in a conference full of FB-first teams, no one in the SEC even cares about BB except UK, one-team conference, etc, etc, etc."

When we are a normally good UK BB team, we typically respond with "Who we play doesn't matter....let's see you beat us in the tournament."

Well........enter Gonzaga. Good players with a great coach playing top-shelf basketball--a thing of beauty.. Who they play doesn't really matter. Let's see someone beat them in the tournament.

If they win out.....the naysayers will be there, but the banner will say "National Champions." The only thing that matters ....(and the only thing that used to matter to Kentucky fans).

GBB!
The SEC is much, much better in basketball than the WCC.

I wonder if there's really would be tho.

Most likely, while there's would be more games, our strength of schedule would be better.

If I"m a UK fan, I'd make the argument well yes you played more games but the games that we didn't play were cupcake games (more than likely at home) that we were going to win regardless. If I look at the teams UK played this season in the non conference only 1 is north of 100 and even they are in the top 150. The additional games we missed we normally play are teams in the 200s and 300s.

Now we did miss the Texas game this season but we also missed Texas AM and Detriot Mercy, both teams if we were going for an undefeated season we would have beaten anyways.

Now the road stuff I think that's a valid point but FWIW there was still a home advantage this season. It didn't completely evaporate.

But I can see your point. And I'm sure some fans would indeed feel that way.

40-0 >>>>> 32-0.

I just wonder if those 8 games were home games against little sisters of the poor, whether or not it really matters.
