I've only driven through Alabama...but I've been to Mississippi. They're basically the same state. The town we stayed in in Mississippi still had a "white laundromat" and a "colored laundromat". This was the 90s. Our bus got dropped off at the "colored laundromat" and a lady asked if we were sure we were in the right place. We told her why we were in town and that today was laundry day. It ended up being a fun time as we chatted with the patrons and they thought our activity as we described it, was pretty interesting (we were there for a drum and bugle corps show).I have tremendous respect for your judgment and intellect, seniorgolfer, and based on what you do on this site consider you to be a true gentleman. I think that experience was an eye opener for me as well as many others. Our corps was pretty diverse and being from the northeast, southern racism and segregation was something we only learned about in text books and discussing MLK. In Boston you had pockets of racism (Irish South Bostoners for one) but nothing where you had widespread "self segregation" like this.
You were playing their tune (literally). I’d like to go to Mississippi - or perhaps would have liked to go to Mississippi 30 years ago. There was so much interesting and amazing music that has largely died out. Other Turner actually recorded some albums, it’s pretty amazing. Can’t imagine a big picnic with down home cooking, some shine and that music. Man.
