Says Pitino loved him until the free throw thing at Vandy in '94. Had video of Ford pointing directing the FT thing. Cutler got
Ford and Brassow to joke about it and Pitino went nuts. Says Pitino when Earl Weaver on him.

Says that Pitino ended their relationship after that. Says Rick confided in him etc up to that point.

Also mentioned how he helped get Travis Ford to KY. Didn't know that.

What happened exactly with the free throws?
At VU in '94 Ford coordinated sending wrong guys to the line 3 times. I recall it vividly. Ford for sure and I believe Martinez were suspended for a game against UT I believe for it.

I was 11 then so I don't vividly remember the game, but how was Ford even allowed to dictate that? Isn't that the coaches decision?

Kentucky Suspends 3 In Free-throw Incident

THE INQUIRER STAFF
POSTED: February 23, 1994
Three Kentucky basketball players received one-game suspensions in connection with a free-throw swapping scheme that occurred during the Wildcats' game against Vanderbilt on Saturday.

Coach Rick Pitino said guard Travis Ford, center Gimel Martinez and forward Jared Prickett won't make the trip to play Tennessee today.

Ford had acknowledged that players who were fouled in the Vanderbilt game allowed another player with a better free-throw percentage to go to the line in their place, apparently when officials were confused about who should shoot.

Pitino said he called Vanderbilt coach Jan van Breda Kolff and both agreed the free throws didn't affect the result of the game, won by Kentucky, 77-69.

Ky. Bars 3 In Foul Shot Scam

Daily News Wire Services
POSTED: February 23, 1994
After learning that three of his players were involved in a free throw swapping scheme against Vanderbilt, Kentucky coach Rick Pitino hit each of them with one-game suspensions.

Guard Travis Ford, center Gimel Martinez and forward Jared Prickett will not make the trip with the No. 7 Wildcats to play Tennessee tonight, Pitino said yesterday.

"This type of behavior cannot be tolerated from a Kentucky ballplayer," Pitino said.

Ford is averaging 12 points and 6.3 assists and Prickett averages 8.6 points and 7.1 rebounds, and both are starters. Martinez averages 7.1 points and 2.8 rebounds.

The players were not available for comment.

Ford had acknowledged that players fouled in the Vanderbilt game allowed another player with a better free throw percentage to go to the line in their place, apparently when officials were confused about who should shoot.

Kentucky won, 77-69.

Pitino said he called Vanderbilt coach Jan van Breda Kolff and apologized for the incident. Both agreed the free throws didn't influence the result of the game.

Once late in the game Martinez (80.5 percent) shot free throws even though Prickett (54.9 percent) had been fouled.

Pitino said he was told of the switch at a team meeting Monday night.

"It was probably the most upset that I've seen him," forward Jeff Brassow said.

Ford confirmed to a television reporter after the Vanderbilt game that he set up another swap when he motioned Walter McCarty (51.2 percent) to shoot for Andre Riddick (31.8 percent).

"I saw the ref run to the (scorer's) table real quick. He had no idea who was supposed to shoot the free throw. I turned to Walter and said, 'You get on the line.' And it worked out fine," Ford said in the postgame TV interview.

Pitino was upset that the players made light of the swaps.

"I think it was a grave mistake on our players' part, not only to do it, but to joke about it afterward on television," he said. "I don't think it was a joking matter. I think it was dishonest."

Neither McCarty nor Riddick received sanctions.

I agree he probably knew. But it was Ford who spear headed it I'm sure.

The crux of it really:

Pitino said he was told of the switch at a team meeting Monday night.

"It was probably the most upset that I've seen him," forward Jeff Brassow said.

Ford confirmed to a television reporter after the Vanderbilt game that he set up another swap when he motioned Walter McCarty (51.2 percent) to shoot for Andre Riddick (31.8 percent).

I was also 11. I did remember something about it but I thought it was just once. And I didn't know about the post game interview where he flat out laughed about it. Ford is kind of an ***. Shot like a mo-fo though.

RPs only regrets about anything like these and other incidents is that he got caught. That's it. How dare he get caught, people talk about it or take him to task about anything.

I think maybe back then it was more 'coach speak' perhaps than anything. A coach has to play the 'role' of a coach whether he agrees/wants to or not. Much like the incident Saturday as he was leaving Rupp. Statements from RP that he didn't do it, that it was a we're No. 1 salute, etc. If one of the UL players had done the exact same thing...RP would have played the 'coach role', made a statement of how 'we don't do things like that at UL', etc, etc and may or may not have suspended the player for their next game. With the video evidence..probably would have. But since it was him, and there's been nothing from UL as an institution, he can keep denying it.

At least he doesn't suspended players for hookers. That would be crossing the line.

We had two brothers on my high school team who looked a lot alike. One was a better free throw shooter than the other. Our coach had one wear number 21 and the other wear number 12. The better shooter shot most of his brothers free throws all season and it was never questioned by anyone.
