One of the group of guys I go on golf trips with which is typically no more than a 3 hour drive from Atlanta (even though we went 6 hours on the 20th anniversary) is planning on a Pinehurst trip for the 25th anniversary in 2020. I've only been there once which was 1993 so it has been a long time. Trip is 3 nights/4 rounds and one of the rounds is on #2. Cost for the trip not including what I will spend on the side is $1500. Worth it in your opinion? Thanks.

I have never played #2, just hasn't been a priority. You will have to pay for a caddy on #2. That's probably 1/4 of that trip. When are you going?
Where are you staying? To me? $1500 for something 18 months in the future seems an easy no brainer, especially for something you certainly enjoy.
I "joined" this group in 2006 and haven't missed a year since I was "accepted". (The whole thing is a little corny but even if it is corny being "club" of individuals, it is extremely fun). Since I joined, it has always been the weekend after Mother's Day in May. But for the Pinehurst trip since, going in May versus June is even more ridiculous in terms of cost. So, the "committee" just said June as the time frame.
In the past on course where caddies have been mandatory, that hasn't been included in the cost as you have to pay the caddies with cash at the end. So, I'm doubting the caddy cost is included. But I'm guessing the round at #2 is in the $350-$450 range and is in the overall cost.
Yes to Airport as well as Coop, staying at the Pinehurst resort and playing all four rounds on the Pinehurst courses.
I can afford the $1500 even though after all said is done, I will spend easily $2000 but your point is very well taken, Coop. Typical cost of the weekend (not counting the 20th Anniversary trip) is $400-$600 for a 2night and 3 or 4 round weekend.
Great time of the year, I assume you are playing the resort courses, all are great from what I've been told. I completely understand the group get together. We use to go to Florida as a group in Feb but then guys got older and retired, died, and we just quit going. I'd say go for it.
My dad is in one of those golf clubs that go to Myrtle Beach every Memorial Day week. He legit bases his whole summer off that trip, so I say spend the money and have fun.
They sent out an email to the group (over 60 guys) asking whether or not they would be interested as it is a major change to the "normal" in terms of drive from Atlanta, total cost (one of the rules of the group is absolutely no whining about money and they have thrown people out of the group in the past because of violations) and change in time of the year of the trip. So far for people responding, it has been an enthustiastic "YES". I haven't responded yet.
Yes, I typically go on 3 weekend golf trips with three different groups of guys and then the week long Myrtle Beach World Am Championship in late August. I also set my year based on these vacations.
Since I play tournament golf, my trips are to play in those. It can get fairly expensive over the first of April - till the end of Oct. I get to play on some pretty decent courses here in Va. I should have played in the North South Amateur but never did.
to me it would be worth it just to play #2...but maybe with my card they might cut me some slack....go for it
this year you would be correct...but I think the non gender christmas person is bringing me a G400 Driver to match the rest of the set.....fingers crossed
I had a brand new M 2 that I gave to one of my friends to test drive and he still can't decide if he likes it. I was more consistent with my two year old M 2
Each group does it differently. This group I'm asking about that is planning on going to Pinehurst, the getaway is really more of a beer drinking and poker playing weekend with the guys with some golf, to be honest. Inside of the cost of the trip in which the Commish handles all the money for everything, he will charge each participant around $50 for the group bets. On the Saturday rounds, we will play a gross score round on your own ball and pay off the Low Gross and a Blind Bogey Low Net Winner in the morning. Then the highlight is the afternoon Scramble round in which on Friday night there is a draft of the teams which is a blast since everyone is super drunk and a ton of trash talking is going on (I told you it was corny). The foursome winning the Scramble is the big thing and there is payoff. Also during the Scramble round, we have a Closest to the Pin and a Long Drive contest. And the last payoff is a Trophy for "F$#k you are Awful" award and the stories are hilarious as there is a ton of embelishment going on in most years. In addition to the Saturday round official playing of the trip, a lot of guys play on Thursday afternoon, two rounds on Friday and in rare occassions, a Sunday morning round. And there are various side bets and match bets of all kinds going on but these rounds are not organized with the betting. And again, the golf is there for the beer drinking (and cigar smoking for those that partake) mostly.
I don't do any of the organizing; I just show up and have a blast and then write the Commish a check for whatever it costs a month or so later when he communicates.
Sounds great, I got together with my golfing friends last night at a local watering hole and my wife refers to this as the Cocoon club. We are almost all over 60. Sounds like a great group and i certainly would.
Asking for a friend, but do caddys nark on you if you use a tee in the fairway, or use a foot wedge out of the woods?

In my experience with caddies (I've never played with my own caddy but rather the courses have what is known as a "fore-caddy"), they will ask what type of golf is being played: tournament/serious golf, weekend round, little in between or what. If it is a non-serious round, the fore-caddy's are there to get the biggest tip possible and if that includes finding a way to "cheat" the rules to make the round more enjoyable, they do it. I have caught some go ahead of the players and kick balls out of the woods, fake a ball that went into a hazard by mysteriously dropping a ball outside the hazard as "it took a lucky bounce off that rock over there" and all kind of stuff. But I'm a more "serious" type of golfer and I tell my fore-caddy that I play by the rules and they will follow that simple instruction to the max.

Talking handicap, are you aware that the 7 golf body's in the world are working on changing the 7 different handicap systems and there is going to be one universal one for the entire world? I attempted to take the changes I know of and applied it to my current index calculation. It took me from a 12.1 to a 9.6. You being a +1, it isn't going to affect you much (just a guess) but this is pretty interesting stuff to golf nerds like myself.
btw - I'm in full support of the changes as the international calculations are BS. Playing in net tournaments with international players with their Index versus a USGA Index, there is no chance.
I play in the GolfWeek Am GolfTour. Do you know about it? I'm sure they have a Tour in your area. They are Gross tournaments and I enjoy the 5 or 6 I play every year.
Yes, I've heard of it. I play in enough, I wish I had time to enter a usg a senior am. If u make it, you will be gone at least 5 days
There are so many good courses there that you can still have a great time not playing on #2. I did a golf camp there back in the late 80's and played on all the courses but #2, and thought they were all fantastic back then. So if you're getting to play 4 rounds, one of them on #2, for only $1500, that's a pretty good deal IMO.
