Interesting. Wonder how that works when you transfer out of a military academy. Still have any military service required? Now in reserves or guard? Maybe since he didn't graduate there is none. HuJu curious.

Welcome home.

Years ago if you left after one year you just had to pay your tuition back. No other obligation. Not sure if that is still true today.

He already transferred and enrolled at NU a month ago.

He has not been doing anything with the team yet and was just accepted as a walk-on.

I think whatever I read said he was a kicker there but wants to play safety here.

I had a friend in college who left the Naval Academy after 1 semester, and same thing, he had to pay back a lot of cash. I have no idea either if it is still that way. This was 29 years ago.

I believe it is this way through the first 2 years. After the second year, the cadets will then have a military obligation and are considered enlisted. This became an issue during sequestration a few years ago when there was a ban on non-essential travel, so juniors and seniors weren't going to be allowed to travel for road games.

If you leave before your junior year one is free and clear. If you leave after the start of junior year, everything needs to be paid back. Tuition is in the neighborhood of $40000/year. Usually the student enlists to pay it back.

I know several kids, including a couple of cousins' kids, who have gone to a service academy. One I know dropped after sophomore year, one sooner and several completed their 4 years. There is no obligation to pay back if you leave before you start your junior year. They know there is going to be some attrition during that time, because a certain number of kids are going to get there and realize this isn't for me. Kind of a no strings attached chance to back out if you find out it isn't for you allows the academies to get some kids in who probably wouldn't go if there was no practical way out once enrolled. You have essentially one last chance after your sophomore year. After that, you have to pay back tuition for year you attended if you don't finish or accept a commission as an officer after graduating. And, if you do leave after you have started your junior year or refuse a commission once graduated, you will likely be ordered (compelled) to serve several years as an enlisted airman in addition to repaying tuition. I have been told they make those rather unpleasant years. Bottom line is this kid has no financial debt owing to AF if he just attended one semester.

Could be a nice guy to have on your travel roster down the road. Emergency punter/kicker and safety/special teamer guy.
