whats his story? Is he eligible for basketball if we needed him? I have read some articles that suggest he was only eligible for football and can’t play hoops. I’m wondering bc this team needs a guy like him. Former P5 player, senior, tough, big, a man. He’s on our campus and football will be over for him by late December. The question is does he have eligibility?

KSR said he’s exhausted his eligibility basketball-wise.

The NCAA allows an athlete 5 years of athletic eligibility and financial aid eligibility.

So you have 5 years to complete 4 seasons athletically. There have been a few cases where a 6th year was granted. (6th calendar year to complete 4 seasons of play)

Georgia Techs QB:
2016-Redshirted
2017-Played
2018-Missed with injury
2019-Playing
2020-eligible
2021-eligible

It's definitely a weird situation. Played 3 years of basketball at Iowa. Grad transferred to UK. Immediately eligible to play and got 2 years of football eligibility. No sitting out and still got the 5 years to use up his eligibility. Normally it's 5 to play 4 but this allowed 5 to play 5.

Not a chance in hell. Bowl prep

Bowl game will be done before the first of the year. We could definitely use him on this team down the stretch given the injuries we ve already suffered. Having him in practice and having another guy with experience wouldn’t hurt either.

He only played 3 years of hoops at Iowa. Wouldn’t that leave him a year of eligibility? Why couldn’t he play, if he wanted to, for us next semester? He will still be enrolled and it would still be in his fifth year. Right?

I agree this makes sense but the articles that were written when he committed basically said his bb eligibility was exhausted so I don’t know. Would like to see him join the team next semester as you say or right after he bowl game. What are we lacking most? Imo it’s a big body and toughness. This guy has it and experience and he is already enrolled.

He only played three seasons. How does that exhaust his eligibility? Is their a rule in place that caused him to lose a year of eligibility?

To my knowledge his eligibility will be up once football is done.

He averaged 1.7 points a game his junior year at IOWA! Don’t think he’d do much at UK after not touching a ball for 2 years.

No wonder schools get into trouble. This crap is confusing as hell. First you have the 5 years to play 4 and then this stuff below.

Asked for clarification about Wagner’s immediate eligibility, an NCAA spokesman pointed to rule 14.5.5.2.7, which allows transfers who have not competed in the new sport for a consecutive two-year period prior to the start date at the new school an exemption to the normal requirement of a year in residence at a new school before playing.

“This four-year transfer exception is sport-specific and therefore is available to student athletes who change sports following transfer and have never or minimally participate in the sport in which they now seek to participate,” the spokesman said.

14.5.5.2.7 Two-Year Nonparticipation or Minimal Participation Exception. The student transfers to the certifying institution from another four-year college and, for a consecutive two-year period immediately before the date on which the student begins participation (practice and/or competition), the student has neither engaged in intercollegiate competition nor engaged in other countable athletically related activities in the involved sport in intercollegiate athletics beyond a 14-consecutive-day period, and has neither practiced with a noncollegiate amateur team nor engaged in organized noncollegiate amateur competition while enrolled as a full-time student in a collegiate institution. The 14-consecutive-day period begins with the date on which the student-athlete first engages in any countable athletically related activity (see Bylaw 17.02.1). The two-year period does not include any period of time before the student's initial collegiate enrollment. (Revised: 1/10/95, 1/9/06)

Nope. He could be immediately eligible for basketball if he wanted.

He likely won’t so we will never get to test the rule. Kyle Tucker keeps saying he is out of eligibility, but he has yet to cite to any rule or fact to support this statement. Ahmad is in his 5th year, and he has satisfied his 1yr in residence.... he could be immediately eligible for basketball.

Bet he can rebound and defend which is all we need for added depth in the frontcourt. With a year of football behind him he would give us a physical force we need.

Bowl prep, then he will focus on preparing for NFL workouts. I'd guess there's about a zero % chance he'd entertain playing basketball even if he were eligible, and nor should he.
