If I say that I would hope the team was not such a giant steaming piling of dog crap that it still could have beaten Arkansas State, Rutgers, Illinois and Purdue with one of the other QBs on the roster, does that make me a Tanner Lee hater deserving of a stern finger-wagging?

Didn't POB get sacked 7 times in a half against mediocre Minnesota?
And let me guess: the offensive line in that half was not nearly as bad as the crappy line Lee had to play behind all season!

Did I get my fanboy talking points right?

Without Tanner, we would not have won even four.

???

It doesn't really matter. Lee is gone and it is time to move on. I thought the Senior Bowl was a microcosm of Tanner's career. A few good passes, a dumb fumble and then an even dumber interception that wasn't very close to his intended target.

no. I agree the line was the major issue. Both QBs in the game suffered the same fate.

Dumb fumble? He gets hit from behind by a DE running full speed who didn't get touched by the OT and it's Lee's fault. Ok. The INT was nothing more than the WR not stopping in the zone where Lee thought he was going to stop. That's just a QB/WR timing thing. Lee had to throw that one before the guy turned and looked. That's all.

I think that staff would have made any QB look bad. If you buy a bad steak and then tell the cook to grill it on high for 2 hours does it really matter who the cook was?

One mistake (of many!) Riley made was not getting a transfer or juco in year 1 who could run his offense. Playing Tommy two years only delayed what needed to be done by two years. If instead we had started a QB that could run Riley’s system in year 1, by year 3 Lee probably wouldn’t have been needed — and we probably would’ve done better in 2017. (Of course, our bad 2015 probably would have even been worse, but a bad first year was expected and forgivable.)

Hopefully, Scott won’t make the same mistake and will play the guy who can best run his system right away, even if it’s the true freshman. 2018 schedule suggests we’ll take our lumps anyway. At least by year 3 we won’t be starting all over again at QB like Riley did.

Mike Riley coached teams had MUCH more inadequacies to worry about than QB play. One player is important- but SO IS ALL OF THIS:

Offensive Line Play
Attitude/Mental Toughness- team was soft
Strength and Conditioning
Physicallity
Blocking
Proper Pursuit Angles
Block Destruction
Tackling
Practice Approach
Playcalling
Scheme
Speed

I actually think that if Mike Riley would have decided to run his pro style system from day 1 and replaced Tommy with some statue QB, we would have only won 4 or 5 games that first year. The second and third years would be more of the same Oregon State like results.

On the other hand, if you put Tommy on this years 4 win team and you run the offense from Riley’s 2nd season, we at least win 7-8 games. That’s even with Diaco’s 4 quarter, soft coverage, no blitz, prevent defense.

Statue QBs require a lot of top talent around them or they have to be in a system like Mike Leach’s spread to have success.

I agree because the O-Line and Defensive performance was so poor that we were actually lucky to have won 4 games.

Probably could only count on one hand the players that made a difference in 2017. Tanner Lee is one that got better and JD Spielman are two that went all out that immediately come to mind.

I know it sounds harsh but these are facts.

Correct
Nebraska could very easily have been a 2 win or 1 win team in 2017

The wins against Arkansas something and Purdue were extremely fortunate
Rutgers was also in the game
Illinois was the only not in doubt win

Think about that
Extremely fortunate to beat Arkansas something Purdue and even Rutgers

That's wayyyyyy to scary to seriously think about. As if our mighty Beaver HC wasn't inept enough with four wins.......
