Aggressive Good Offense beats Defense

Watching Nova, and looking back at Kentucky, it seems pretty clear that aggressive offense beats defense. I think back to Gabriel in the SEC tourney, and his willingness to take 3's. Nice that he hit a lot, but even taking them versus passing the ball around or trying to always work inside with resulting turnovers or bad shots was the better option.

Against, K-State I remember Gabriel taking one 3 and missing. Was there ever an aggressive offense by him again? Knox in the first half also was reluctant to take shots after missing one or two and throughout the game our offense seemed fairly one dimensional. Drive to the basket or pass to PJ for a drive to the basket. In the meantime, K-State which was not a great shooting team was willing to take a number of open look 3's. Yes, PJ missing free throws cost us the win, but it might not have even been that close with better aggressive offense and willingness to put up some outside shots.

Early in the Mich/Nova game, Michigan built a lead by aggressive offense. They took it to Nova. At the same time, other than Brunson on the inside, Nova was taking and missing shots that rolled around the rim and would come out. Did that ever stop them from continuing to launch those outside shots? No. Eventually, they fell into rhythm combined with Michigan taking some off balanced outside shots and then abandoning their aggressiveness. Of course all of this is a bit more complicated depending upon rebounding for second shots (Nova being way more quick to have those rebounds), but nevertheless, in the second half even with hands in his face, DiVincenzo was aggressive with his shots.

I hope next season with our team that Cal leans more on the shooters than athletes. Yes, Cal preaches defense but unless your team has shooters than can hit some 3's, offense wins these games eventually.

Great defense beats good offense. Great offense beats good defense. Great defense and good offense makes a good game with great offense and good defense. I’d take great defense over great offense, only because it’s easier to get cold offensively than defensively.

Nova's defense improved a LOT over the season. Much of that had to do with Spellman's development. But even he got exposed early by Mo Wagner.

Michigan played very aggressive defense and picked up the guards outside the three point line. That's why they were effective early and Nova was missing shots. DiVincenzo was more of a matchup problem for their guards one on one, and has range that surprised them. And he was also able to put the ball on the floor a few times and get past that perimeter defense for some layups. Spellman did a great job sealing off Wagner on those drives.

Michigan did some of the same things on defense that K State did to UK. They forced a lot of one on one play. Good defenses can do that. UK just didn't have guys as good as Brunson and Bridges and DiVincenzo that could pick apart a good defense.

Kentucky did play aggressive against KSU, the missed free throws is what lost it. Don't have to be 3 pointers to make it aggressive, pounding inside is also aggressive and would have worked if, big if, PJ would have hit his % that night. The aggressive inside would have beat the aggressive outside except for him shooting 40% instead of his usual 60%. Plus ask most coaches and they will tell you that chucking jump shots from 3 is not considered aggressive, any team can do that. What makes Nova so good is the passing to get a better shot and the defense is constant pressure applied by them that wears a team down physically and MENTALLY. That is how they win.

Aggressive and NCAA Tourney do not go together when talking about Calipari though. He may run and gun in the season but when it comes down to it, he becomes a grind it out type of coach in the tourney.

Unfortunately, thus seems to be the pattern.
Hope it gets modified

He tightens up in close tourney games and his teams reflect that. Playing stall ball is what lost the Wisconsin game.

I am a youth basketball coach, and we practice defensive sets and rotation for 60% of our practices. The other 40% is offensive sets, free throws, and situational stuff (inbounding, rebounding, etc).

Here's why I do it this way. Defense is something that can be controlled the entire game. You are in charge of your own destiny on the defensive side of the ball.

By contrast, you can run the most crisp, perfect offensive set and sometimes the shots just don't fall. If you don't have near-perfect defense to back that up, you no longer have control over anything.

Give me defense every single time.

Credit to Jay Wright for making solid in game adjustments. With Brunson on the bench, he moved DiVincenzo to the point and allowed him to intiate the offense.

Chicken or egg question. I feel that great defense can win lots of games, BUT, at some point, you have to score more points than your opponent.
