I was about to respond to dirt on this one. Regardless of what you think of the blocking technique, on a pass beyond the line of scrimmage, downfield WR's are not allowed to begin blocking before the pass...something that clearly occurred and something that looks to have prevented at least one of our defenders from being able to make the play.

This should not have been a TD.

The throat slash turned the refs against this team. They were not impartial to us anymore after that.

Can't blame 'em ... they're only human. I saw one throat slash in another game that was on television but was not called. Officials must not have seen it. It was right on the end line. Don't remember which game, but the SEC was playing. It's no wonder the other conferences don't like the SEC.

Another egregious penalty for me was the facemask by Gibson. You gotta know you can't grab and hold the facemask for that long. Basic

If you think the way that game was called was fair, then that says all anybody needs to know about your football knowledge.

No trying to be a dick, and you could defend it if they had a single penalty called on them. They didn’t, it wasn’t even close to fair.

The bottom line is this guys. If we execute a few more plays we win the game. If Thompson catches that wide open pass he probably scores. If Guidry doesn’t drop a wide open pass we score. If Abram doesn’t blow a coverage that’s one less TD they score. If Osiris Mitchell catches that wide open TD against Florida we win another game. I could go on. It’s about execution. Coaches coach, players play. Another thing, Moorhead can’t call what he wants to call because his QB can’t throw the ball. It’s that simple. Fitz had a good career and we should be appreciative of him and his effort but he’s not a passing QB and for this offense to go we have to have a passing QB. Bottom line. No other way around it. There is no other truth than that. Its 100% the problem with our offense. Let him get his guys in and let him work. He didn’t forget how to coach.

Pic of Receiver Catching the Ball

If the pass is behind the LOS you can block down field.

The receiver went downfield a couple yards and came back to make the catch. Then he proceeded to keep circling around behind the line before he headed up the sideline. This looks like it is past the line when he catches it. The line judge ought to be able to see that. But, I don't know if he could see the blockers already blocking. All in all, I think some sort of penalty could have been called - holding against Abram (although this still is after the blocker had grabbed Abram with his left arm and Abram had turned to the sideline) and blocking on a downfield pass. But, I can also see how they missed it - or gave Iowa the benefit of the doubt because they were all sort of close and happening quickly. Being a State fan, I have no doubt if State were on offense and made this exact same play some sort of penalty would have been called.

I am sure there were some penalties committed by Iowa and not called just like there were a few against us I was surprised were not called. I just did not see anything blatantly obvious that was missed. Hell if their O-line was holding us they sure suck at it because we were in the backfield more than their running backs were. I sure would have liked to have something called against Iowa, but my statement was that I could not really argue with anything called against us.

Bottom line is we did NOT lose because of the refs.

^^^ This.

We had a 1st and goal at the end of the 1st half negated by a holding penalty.
We had a promising drive killed because of an offensive facemask penalty.
We had a busted coverage lead to a 75 yard TD given up.
We had two 15 yard penalties lead to an Iowa FG.
We had a 1st and goal at the 1 and couldn't score a TD.
We had a TD pass bobbled by a wide open receiver then intercepted in the end zone. Iowa scored another FG on the ensuing drive.
We had two turnovers on our side of the field that led to Iowa TDs.

We played like absolute hot garbage and cost ourselves the game. The refs had no bearing on the outcome.

Could not argue too much about calls on us, though at least one PI was iffy, and I don't think the targeting was correct, as you can see from replay he clearly lead with his shoulder, even getting his shoulder under the Iowa player's armpit. Can't very well detach a players head so that no helmet-to-helmet occurs at any time.

And yes, we did enough to lose this game in combination with some one-sided officiating. That said, Iowa's last & go-ahead, game-winning TD was the result of a few missed calls on Iowa. Two/three of the most egregious were the 4th & 1 play they ran late in the 3rd Q (blatant hold and even facemask on Gerri Green by Iowa #77)and the following TD pass that should have been called for offensive PI (WR blocking downfield prior to a pass thrown beyond the LOS) & holding on the WR blocking Abram.

On the 4th & 1 play in particular, Gerri was in position to stuff their QB 2-3 yards short of the 1st down. Only reason he didn't make the play is he was grabbed by #77, pulled down, and then #77 grabbed Gerri by the facemask and pulled him away from the QB who was headed straight for Gerri.

Worst case scenario for us should have been them attempting a FG, perhaps taking a 20-19 lead, then us getting the ball again. Given they won by 5 points, I'd say that was a big-time-game-changer-of-a-blown-call. And it was right out in the open where the refs couldn't miss it.

Inaccurate on the refs having no bearing. Our screw-ups were simply enough to make it possible for us to lose with some unfair officiating. Had we not repeatedly shot ourselves in the foot, we would likely have beat them by 2-3 TD's.

With the screw-ups, a fairly-called game most likely sees us winning by 3-6 points.

Nick held on and then jerked the defeder's facemask as he was going out of bounds. The ref threw his flag after the jerk.

The blocker was in position, engaged with open hands, and drove him to the ground by driving his feet. Textbook open field pancake. Defender didn’t even attempt to engage.

Go to the 3:24 mark.

From my point of view the block on Dantzler was legal but the block on Abram was a arm hook and take down which prevented Abram's from making a play on the receiver.

The block on Dantzler cannot even be argued as legal. That Iowa player is not allowed to engage and block a defender on a pass that goes beyond the LOS until the pass has been thrown. It is clear as day he did not wait.

The only time that is legal is if the pass is completed behind the LOS.

I never complain about officiating and usually mock those who do because it's just crybaby stuff. I dont have a problem with most of the calls today. My only thing is this....if you're going to call them, then call them. If you're going to call us for holding, then when they tackle a defender in the open field on their last TD, you gotta flag that too. If you're going to make us take a time out because you wouldn't reset the game clock for us, then dont reset the game clock for them. If you're going to call borderline targeting, you gotta call it both ways.

Officiating was not consistent at all.

Not only that, on their last TD they had all of their WRs blocking downfield before the pass was thrown to a receiver past the LOS. That is not legal. WRs can only block ahead of a player catching a ball when the pass is behind the LOS.

Following the throat slash we got hit with targeting which then led to a field goal.

Yep, everything in the first half went to crap after the throat slash. We went from what should have been Iowa punting and us with a 6-0 lead to Iowa scoring the next 17 points including 3 points on that drive that also included a 15 yard questionable targeting foul.

Calling the targeting penalty “questionable” is an understatement at best. That might have been the worst call I’ve seen in college football all season.

Wouldn't have been an issue there if we had just wrapped up and tackled. We had WAY too many instances on defense during the bowl game where we apparently were trying to knock people over like a bowling pin instead of wrapping up and tackling. The play where Hockenson got about 30 yards after the catch was horrendous tackling by our defense.

When did the throat slashing penalty happen?
I don't remember it.

First play of the 2nd quarter, Iowa's third possession. It was 2nd and 8, and Kelly-Martin ran around right tackle for a 3 yard loss. It was kind of a gang tackle and a lot of guys were celebrating, but apparently Kobe Jones gave a throat slash signal. I never actually saw it, but the refs called it.

yea its pretty bad.

14 from Iowa reached out with his left hand and grabbed Abram when he went to run by him, then yanked him back in front of him and drove him to the ground. I wouldn't call that a textbook block....I'd call that a hold.

Abrams is already past him, then gets pulled back and ends up on the ground.

That was my issue. ALL holding calls are judgment and we didn't get ANY judgement calls in our favor in the bowl game, however blocking downfield prior to a ball being thrown that goes beyond the line of scrimmage is black and white against the rules.

I think that gesture along with us chirping all game (if that was going on) probably did us no favors with the refs. Its very rare to see one team with 90 yards in penalties and the other team with none. The penalty yards made up for most of the differential in total offensive yards between the 2 teams.

If you think a bunch of 2 star white bums from Iowa can block this defense all day and not commit at least 1 penalty then I don’t know what to tell you... Officiating was pretty terrible.

Actually, two of the guys are African-American, but don't let that slant your rant. Iowa puts OL in the NFL at a consistent rate and Ferentz is a guru. He knows exactly how to coach guys to hold and not get called for it. I certainly didn't see much holding as your DL spent all day in our backfield.

Ok......so we are a week removed from that crap show of a bowl game, so the emotions aren’t near as raw. I have to agree with you Knighthawk; if Iowa was holding, they weren’t doing a great job b/c State’s Dline was getting pressure. All Iowa did was take advantage of State’s miscues, penalties and offensive ineptness and make some timely plays. The play over the top on our safety really sticks out. You have to give credit to Iowa for not shrinking from the moment and just playing a consistent, penalty free game against a pretty decent Bulldog team.

For some Iowa perspective, I was over on one of the Iowa fan sites to get a feel for their “take” on the game. Mostly jubilant folks who really appreciated that they beat a talented, middle of the pack SEC team. Of course they have their share of idiots like State does, but most comments were about how they can build on this win for next year.

I found a post game interview with one of Iowa’s WR’s, Brandon something from MS who didn’t get any offers from OM or MSU. Honestly, i found it hard not to like the guy. He talked about going to the Egg Bowl with his family as a kid, and how he never thought he would end up playing against MSU. Seemed like a really nice kid who is making a solid contribution to Iowa’s team.
