We have all heard the bad. And there is plenty of it. But, for a kid who hasn’t played since junior year of high school and has been hampered by a tweaked knee he has the goods. I mean, he is very good. He doesn’t look like a true freshman out there. He is probably due for a couple rough games coming up but he is the type of QB you can build your offense around. Now....if only the oline could get in line. That’s a serious project.

Ozigbo would be a good as well. I would put Bootle as a good. Morgan Jr , stolle and JD would be good-. After that EVERYONE gets an F from me.

What’s the bad? Kid looks like a future star considering everything he’s gone through and what he has around him

Sorry...I meant as in the team overall. Martinez is no doubt one of the few bright spots.

There is some bad from Martinez, but IMO the bad is just the youthful mistakes - missing open receivers because he doesn't do his progression, not getting outside of the pocket to get rid of the ball... things like that. Entirely expected from a true frosh starting at QB, though

Also taking a seven yard loss instead of just tossing the ball out of bounds. Of course he made up for it with a 20 yard run on the next play. I am impressed with him overall, as long as he stays healthy he's going to be great.

Our record is what it is. It’s going to get bloody. But that’s what it is this year. We just need to improve. It’s that simple. Not saying we have to be great or even good. Just gotta get better. I saw some positives on offense this week.

Oz is a clear cut #1. Bell brings nothing to this offense. Bell is a worse version of Oz type of back. The change of peace back needs to be Mozer or Washington. Different types of backs. but ultimately use Oz as a workhorse. We miss a fullback in the short game and the short game is killing us and it shouldn’t be that’s way.

The line isn’t good enough and they need that fullback to clear a path on 3rd & 4th down with 1 yard to go. That’s 2 games that not having a shirt running game killed us. but they are sorta strange cause their not always awful.

Sometimes I see great holes for backs. Better then we’ve seen. Oz doesn’t run for 170 if the line is awful. They just can’t keep it going. And aren’t a good at driving bodies off the line. At times that can really position well to get what they want. And that’s refreshing is many ways. Again Oz doesn’t have a big day w/out it. But we’ve got to have a package for short yardage runs.

I liked how AM responded in the 2nd Half. Going to have growing pains. But i saw a better offense this week. And I can see the growing of a good QB. I think he played tight in the 2nd Q. Wasn’t really trusting his body. Who can Blame him. But if he’s over that, we should be better on offense every week.

The defense is just a mess. Sad thing is, I didn’t think it was this bad the first 2 games. Mick being hurt kills us. Having to use Davis at nose sucks. He was getting pressure the first few games coming off of the edge. Now he’s a space eater and not a great one at that. Not going to knock the kid too hard, he’s not playing his best spot. Bootle has improved a lot and turning out to be solid.

The Linebackers and secondary are so hard to judge because the D-line are so bad. If you give a kid all day to throw guys will eventually get space. It’s the quick hitters though that makes me worried. The defense is the problem

This kid is great given time to throw but you put any kind of blitz on this kid because of his lack of experience, he has a deer in the headlights look and throws the ball up for grabs or makes a dumb throw. Not his fault because of lack of experience. Give Martinez a year under his belt...he has all the makings of a great QB. You guys are lucky to have him!

the short game is killing us

This might be the hardest thing to watch as a Husker fan. I think we are O-fer on 4th and 1 this year. Maybe a pistol formation to get the RB running down hill on short yardage situations? Frost addressed it in the post game, said they like to go fast on 3rd/4th and short but if they can't get a yard the coaches need to figure something else out.

Yeah, Martinez is pretty darn good for a true freshman. I was wrong in saying that he wasn't very good in a different thread. I think I was blinded by a few bad decisions that killed drives (bad INT) and completely missing receivers. If he stays healthy he could be special.

All of these guys are making mistakes pretty much. They are ALL first year players in these systems. the O line misses assignments. The RBs don't pick up a blitz. Martinez misses an open guy maybe because he's worried about his protection. A WR or RB doesn't run his route exactly like he should so AM misses him by a couple of feet for what would have been a big gainer. One guy holds. Another guy doesn't line up right. etc etc etc. They're all making too many mistakes but at some point this mess is going to come together and it's going to make us very happy.

I agree he is the type of QB you can build your offense around. But at times he very much looks like a true frosh out there. A very talented true frosh, but a true frosh on certain things none the less.

And yes the O-line is not helping him at times. Cant trust his protection.

Martinez has looked like exactly what he is: A very promising true freshman
promising freshman surrounded by a bunch of guys still learning the system. Growing pains. Horrid at times and then suddenly beautiful for a play or two. It will get better.

Martinez should have been given a year to grow into this system. Point blank that should have happened. Might have been different if he had not been on the shelf his senior year in high school due to injury. These were all things that it appears Frost did not take into account when making his QB decision and then telling the guys that the starter was his go to guy unless injured.

I really don't think it matters one way or another. This year in hindsight with this schedule was going to be a lost cause. I suppose IF Gebbia had been here and could have gotten us wins by finishing out CU and then giving us a little something more against Troy maybe, but that was a long shot. Bunch played OK. Getting all of the Diaco flushed out of our system is proving to be one of our biggest problems IMO.

If you look on the back end yesterday when Blough had the 1st of his 2 runs, he had no one to pass to as all of his receivers were covered like stink on ****. We get better DL play and and a decent pass rush, the D looks radically different and badass. DL play and lack of a pass rush has made it very difficult on the 2nd and 3rd levels of this D. Not having a quality DL no matter the scheme will make the LB's and secondary look pretty bad. Just sayin.

he makes some bad interception decisions, but hopefully that goes away with experience, and hopefully a line that can block.
other then that, it's hard for me to find anything to complain about.

I think his knee is still limiting him. Not the same as he was against the Buffs and I think the Purdue coaching staff zeroed in on that. He stared moving better in the second half but not enough to rattle Purdue’s coordinator. Hope he gets well enough to ditch the brace.

In 2 of the 3 games he’s played in, he’s gained over 700 yards of offense. Michigan was a tough go as he wasn’t 100% and our OLine was about 30% in terms of play.

I can’t wait to see him reach his potential. Will that be 700 yards per game?

Gotta add Mo Barry and I'd add D Williams as well ... The two young TE need more experience and strength but have done ok in their timee, also Washington has the goods as well

He makes mistakes under pressure. His throwing percentages and his ability to look through progressions make me very optimistic. Haven’t had a guy like that, that will also run, in a long time.

Just have to handle the blitz better. Starts with better OL play but AM needs to make quicker reads. It will come, he's near the bottom of my concern list.

Yeah So far Bell is a bust, he looks very slow. Can't break tackles. Can't get to the edge. I love the idea of JUCO guys but as we often find out from top rated high school guys, it doesn't always translate to the next level. His prediction of "only needing 1 year" might be a bit off.

We shouldn't be surprised...CSF play calling on 3/4 downs and short last year sucked also!

We just need to get through this season and pray AM stays healthy as a horse. Kid has all the goods and will be that much better next year because of all that he's going through and will see for the remainder of the schedule. He has dynamite playmaking ability and looks pretty damned poised for a true frosh. I also trust he's going to more than learn from all these first year mistakes.. honestly I wish we could fast forward to next year right now.
