For this first week of class at Nebraska, the football team’s winter conditioning program is technically optional.

Technically. But not if you’re interested in what budding team leaders like sophomore Adrian Martinez thinks.

“Guys on the team made sure to let everyone know that we’re getting to work right away,” the quarterback said Friday on the "Husker Sports Nightly" radio program. “We know what we want to accomplish and it’s going to take some hard work and dedication throughout this semester, through the fall, throughout the season. It starts now. (Head strength coach Zach Duval) is going to push us to the max and we’re excited for it.”

Martinez, of course, started 11 of 12 games as a freshman and established himself as one of the best young signal-callers in the Big Ten and the country. He set multiple freshman and school records in completing 64.6 percent of his passes and accounting for more than 3,200 yards and 25 total touchdowns.
shman year progressed — particularly after he won the starting job in August and challenger Tristan Gebbia transferred — Martinez’s leadership role grew steadily.

“I know he’s going to get better, but what we really need from him is to step up and be the leader on offense,” Frost said last month. “He kind of started doing that toward the end of year this past year, but everybody’s going to look to him next year.”

Martinez says he’s up for it.

“No doubt. I’m excited about this new challenge. … My play can only get better,” he said. “I think I can only improve as a player and a person and I think the guys on the team respect my mentality. I’m really trying to establish myself as a leader and as someone that they can look to as consistent on and off the field. I’m going to learn from the past leaders, where they made mistakes and where they succeeded and do my very best to make this team as great as it can be.”

The next step in that process is the formal winter conditioning program, which will run from now until just before spring ball begins in early March.

“Guys have to give it their all in the weight room,” Martinez said. “You have to get what you can get done day by day. We have to get better. You have to push yourself, push each other, grow as a team. Some of these new guys coming in, we have to pick them up with us and get them on the same level, same standard and we’re doing that currently. Just making sure that we’re coming to work every day and having the mentality that what happened last year cannot happen again.”

Martinez said he worked out but didn’t throw while he was home in Fresno, California, over the holiday break between semesters because quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco wanted him to get some mental and physical rest.

“It was nice to be back and see my family and some of my buddies, but it was a little too long of a break for me,” the 6-foot-2, 220-pounder said. “I was excited and anxious to get back and we’re looking forward to next year.”

Remember when Martinez over Gebbia was controversial.....good times.
I think most agreed that in the long run, Adrian would be the guy. It was a matter of immediate success and depth (we probably beat Troy, maybe Colorado, if Gebbia stuck around, and that changes the complexion of the season) that made Gebbia's departure frustrating to me. However, if the long-term success we anticipate comes to fruition, those early struggles don't matter (and I already think they don't matter).

Adrian just has it all. The physical tools are mesmerizing, the intelligence and decision making are beyond his years and the leadership and intangibles are natural and incredibly impressive. We may not have the roster around him to take us all the way back to the top but he will go down as one of the best to ever play at Nebraska. I don't think I've been this sure of a kid after his freshman year since maybe Ahman Green.

Every year around this time I start getting my income tax stuff together, start looking at the seed catalogues to plan my garden, and start reading about how dedicated the team will be in the weight room so next year will be different.
Wet blanket.

And make players on opposing teams take cheap shots to try to injure him. Oh wait, that happened in his 1st game.

That was the only answer they had to keep him in check. Unfortunately they had no problem answering against our defense..

I do, big time. And that “handling” nonsense turned out to be a huge load of BS.
I agree that the "handling" rumor was nonsense too.

I remember people making an argument for TG over AM, but I dont remember there being a big stink once AM was announced over TG.

If Nebraska's defense can erode 75 ypg from last year, get 1 more turnover and 1 or 2 less penalties per game, you will see a team that's hard to beat in 2019!

I admit I thought at the time Gebbia should get the nod for 3 reasons. I followed his HS career out here and he was phenomenal. Second, he seemed to be grasping the new system well and had a year in college. And third, he seemed to have the locker room. I was proven wrong. Anyway, when AM was announced I didn't have a coronary, I just disagreed at the time.

There were posts questioning AM’s leadership ability, posts questioning the locker room atmosphere (players wanted Gebbia) and the like... it was kind of a big deal for a few days to a few weeks.

I don't remember people being upset that AM was picked over TG. Just the handling of TG by Frost & Co.
Perhaps I am remembering incorrectly then. I don’t know. Just seems stuck in my memory that there were some posters on here who were convinced that since Gebbia was supposedly the better passer that he was going to (rightly) get the nod. And when he didn’t there was some ******** sour grapes on here about how Frost never intended to play Gebbia, that he knew Martinez would be the starter and so the whole “neck and neck “ competition was a sham. So yeah, the main accusation was “mismanagement” but with strong suggestions that Frost was a liar.

But like I said. Perhaps my memory is screwed up. I am 60 after all. Feeble.

That summarizes it well I think, Pennsy.

Terrible, I thought they would have started this right after the Iowa game, especially since we had a losing record with no bowl game. What a waste of 1 and 1/2 months.

This article is about what they are doing on their own, as nothing is mandatory yet. It is all voluntary. They had a month off for winter break. And yet, Martinez worked out over break. I have no doubt other guys worked out over break. Martinez is saying they have goals which won’t be achieved by doing nothing... They haven’t wasted anything.

Not sure where you are coming from...

I think the training staff knows what they are doing. The kids got some assigned rest right after the season and then began whatever voluntary work was agreed to. I am sure some of the guys were doing rehabbing for injuries as well.

I always said Martinez was going to get the nod, multiple times the whole summer AND I also later said the QB competition was BS toward the end of fall camp.

I was never a sour grape about Gebbia.. You really have it twisted, once again.
