Estimated 100,000 cases
Multiple articles didn’t list number of deaths so let’s just call it 100 or less

100/100,000 equals 0.1%

And Italy (who took a similar path as the US on response) has far worse numbers. And yes, part of that is because of an aging population but that doesnt make it better

Italy

Probably hit hardest besides China

No stats on number tested
15,000 cases
1000 deaths
Very large older population which is causing death rate to rise.
Also, no testing data to confirm how many people actually have it vs self reports, etc.

Italy is hardest hit because they had imported Chinese from Wuhan to work in Italian Leather factories....

No idea if that’s true or not. Got a link?

Several things contributed to Italy.
Not being prepared which is partly on them and partly the nature of an outbreak.
Aging population.
What you said I guess?

By gawd I’m gonna live my life and not let those terrorists.....that virus win. If I spread it and cause people to die then it was meant to be. **

Regular flu kills 300,000-600,000 people every year worldwide. Are we to just shut the world down every November from now on?

We know who has the flu pretty quickly. We can test for it. We can tell those people to stay home. We cannot do that with this yet because people are asymptomatic so long and our capacity for testing is currently embarrassing

I am not sure why this time around there are so many precautions compared to h1n1 or seasonal flu, except that I do know seasonal flu is so common and so low killing that it would be unreasonable to go thru these precautions. Also, the incubation(lack of better term) period is so long with this that it can get out of hand without knowing, which should be concerning.
Your questions/points are valid to mention, but I dont think either is a valid reason to claim this is no big deal or that current measures are too much.

Just because something wasnt done in the past doesnt mean it shouldnt be done in the future. That should be obvious.

I think we also already had a brief encounter with H1N1 in the late 70s and thats why the 09 response wasnt as aggressive. Despite that we still closed some schools briefly. I havent fact checkes the 70s deal though.

High percentage of smokers.
Lots of cultural aspects that makes the virus spread more easily. Kissing and touching when greeting and leaving etc.

You've made your point. We get it. What else are you trying to prove? Lock another thread up.

There are still people on this board comparing this to the flu. There are still people on this board blaming this on media and overreaction.

Their words represent ideas that will actually hurt people. Be outraged at them. I'm sorry if my blunted assholeness hurts your itty bitty feelings. But people need to start publicly calling out this stupidity.

We really don't have the time to debate this as a country. People being offended isn't really as important

I was like you 5 days ago, doubting the severity of this. And I am at the epicenter in the US. I then read this data driven article https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-act-today-or-people-will-die-f4d3d9cd99ca

I walked away with the feeling that if you state or country has active cases and is doing nothing to prevent the spread, it is already too late. Even if you assume a 0.1% mortality, that means for every death there are 1000 infected people. The only true way to stop this if for us to all go no contact for 2-3 weeks. You might also think, no big deal if I get it I'm healthy. But think about everyone you interact with. Are they going to be ok? Most people are infectious before they show any symptoms, so telling people who are sick to stay home is not enough to stop this.

I hope we all get though this, but taking it lightly is not going to make it go away.
