Meridian? Are you even from MS? It is slightly better than Jackson proper.

I grew up in Meridian and it was fine then. Schools were good. Downtown was still a dynamic place. I went there 5 or 6 years ago for a class reunion, drove downtown, and the place was essentially boarded up. I don't think I'd want to live there at all now.

I know that every city in Mississippi has some really dumpy areas. Yes, even Madison.

I would guess that a survey to determine best city to live in covers a wide berth. Places to get drunk probably pale in the determination. But nice restaurants that have good service, good food and modest wait times, competive grocery stores, decent clothing stores, property values (in both directions), outdoor recreation facilities, and number of churches probably rate pretty high.

Is Madison really a city or town, like Starkville? Isn't it just a Jackson suburb? I've never been there that I know of, but I'd always assumed it's much like Madison, Alabama, except smaller. Our "downtown" is about 1 block long and there's really nothing there except a brewery and maybe a couple of stores. The rest of it is just typical urban/suburban sprawl with big box stores, strip malls, and lots of traffic. And of course, lots of houses and lots of apartments. Madison, MS, may be a bit different than my notions since it's farther away from Jackson than we are to Huntsville.

I live there now most of the time too. Went downtown to the Farmers market yesterday morning at 7:30. When I walked in the main gate the first table that was set up was nothing but that, a table with a lady sitting there with a pen and pad. It was Mayor Lynn Spruill sitting there taking notes about whatever anybody wanted to talk about good or bad. Say what you want to about her left leaning ways but I thought that was a great move on her part to make herself available like that.

Hell Starkville ain't got a mall or a Square - FAKE NEWS!

Malls are overrated, passe, and mostly empty or abandoned. Amazon distribution centers are where its at!!!!

Go look at their Twitter page. They have about 50, maybe more, "Best of" places in the state. I think they sorta pass things around, although Oxford seems have had the "Best Downtown" two years in a row.

There’s quite a bit of Southaven that’s not so nice.

Yeah for its actual population, Southaven is gigantic geographically. It's almost like 4 or 5 really small towns comprising one city. Memphis' downturn under Herenton really smashed Southaven hard, and to an even greater extent Horn Lake. This current regime in Memphis is trying their hardest to turn things around, I pray for them.

My wife and I bought a condo on Russell Street across The Mill in January. We were up there this weekend and walked our dogs down to the Farmers Market. This is something that is different than where we live in Flowood. We walk a whole lot more when we are in Starkville....really a nice change of pace. I could see us spending a lot more time there if we ever retired.

You are spot on, minus the apartments and the brewery.

I live in Madison, MS (for only a few years), and honestly, don't get the hype. It's clean and safe, yes, but lacks any type of character or culture, really.
