WASHINGTON (AP) — States will be able to force more shoppers to pay sales tax when they make online purchases under a Supreme Court decision Thursday that will leave shoppers with lighter wallets but is a big financial win for states.

Consumers can expect to see sales tax being charged on more online purchases — likely over the next year and potentially before the Christmas shopping season — as states and retailers react to the court’s decision, said one attorney involved in the case.

The Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision Thursday overruled two, decades-old Supreme Court decisions that states said cost them billions of dollars in lost revenue annually. The decisions made it more difficult for states to collect sales tax on certain online purchases, and more than 40 states had asked the high court to overrule them.

I never had to pay sales tax when I ordered from a catalog over the phone or when I sent in an order form, what is different because it is done online?

I don't see any difference.......I just think we should pay sales tax on any purchases regardless where or how we do them. I have paid tax on some catalog, phone or online purchases.

Sales tax is a state and local controlled thing though. How do you calculate the appropriate tax? Where the business is located or where the purchaser is? What if you live in a state where there isn’t a sales tax but the business is? Vice versa.

Good question. When I buy a car in MD or VA they charge me WV sales tax. If I buy a pair of underwear in VA or MD they charge me VA or MD sales tax.

Agreed. In Colorado, sales tax is a pain in the rear. Where I live, sales tax is combined 5.13%. Drive 2 miles down to the little town, 7.13%. Drive a few more miles down to the Colorado Springs city limits, and it's 8.25%. So are they now just collecting the 2.9% that is the state tax, or do they have to collect the correct rate for my home?

Probably depends on the state but in some states you have to collect state + town taxes. CPA's jobs probably just got more difficult.

Vacation hotspots get you good with 11% (or higher) sales tax.
