I can’t remember which one of you coached an AAU team but I’d like to pick your brain a little. We are in the process of starting up a team and just need advice on who would be willing to help out as sponsors. We are trying to make this affordable to kids who can’t afford the 2K teams but also want the kids/parents to invest a little so they’ll show to practice and games.

My oldest plays on 2 different AAU teams, one of which is relatively new (she was in their first year team). They're younger - avg age was 10-12 but she was playing "up" at 8 so I'm not sure if that'll affect what you're looking for as older teams seem to be more expensive and include more and/or farther travel distance. We did have a sponsor and that sponsor owned a gym so that allowed basically free practice costs. Parents went in on jersey, tourney, and hotel costs however.

Did the gym ask you to put their logo on the unis or shirts? I don’t mind doing that just wondering if that was offered?

Have you thought about getting in touch with Lavar Ball or guru-gary-7 about this. OFC

Speaking of Guru-Gary...I wonder if LaVar Ball is actually Guru-Gary?!?!?

I’m not sure I would wanna traumatize those kids to either of those two idiots!!!

No I don't think they are one in the same. If so all the boy's would have been unc bound with the jersey's already up on the ceiling and hof coach roy william's calling him Mr. Ball sir. OFC

My 12U AAU boys team is comprised of All Stars from our town rec league. I get to choose top 8 players out of 70 rec players, use rec uniforms and obtain non-profit gym rates at high schools which is a huge savings. Three top players left their AAU programs, which charge $800 per season, to join my league at $250. We are rolling this winter. I don't get paid but am beating coaches who do this for a living.

Travel sports $'s are completely out of control.

As long as no one is trying to privately profit from this AAU team, I would recommend you organize and operate as a non-profit 501(c)(3) for IRS purposes. All donations, fees paid in, etc., would be tax deductible. Makes it easier to find sponsors willing to donate and to raise funds.

Amen to your last sentence. There’s an AAU team in Raleigh where I live that claims to be the lowest price around. What they don’t tell you is after you signup, you have to buy the $150 UA bag, $100 worth of clothing, etc. which it ends up being the same price as the others. We are starting our team trying to make it affordable for everyone. $400 max includes tourneys, gym rentals, etc. Coaches get paid nothing. They’re two guys that are 23/24 and love the boys and want them to get better.

That’s the route we are going. Hoping and praying to find a gym/fitness center to give us free gym time in exchange for a logo on our jerseys and T-shirt’s.
