Idea on where to get a high school kid a good catchers mitt? First year playing the position. Not sure we ant to try to break one in now. Wish we had “play it again” sports shop in the area.

I suggest a thinner one. Cushy, padded ones are hard to close if you don't catch it right in the pocket.

Spend the $$ and get an A2000. Break in isn't a huge deal catching pens and generally using every day. Really takes a beating like no other glove on the field. Think about it. It is every pitch. Buy once. Take care of it. And it will last the rest of career.

Granted it's been 15 years, but I had a good bit of trouble with getting my thumb jammed framing outside pitches with Mizunos and Nokonas. With the A2000 that problem went away overnight. Stiffness of the glove in the thumb area was much better. I'm a firm believer in them. Not that all of them haven't changed a bunch of times since then and addressed any obvious issues. But I don't have any reason to think the Wilsons got worse.
