To say that somebody is an MSU alumnus because he attended is not accurate.

I think the definition leaves the possibility open because some institutions label people as "alumni" for various reasons. Certain weekend retreats and other such programs would possibly call people "alumni" once they had participated. I admire your research, but the broad application of the word suggested by it does not apply to Mississippi State University.

I know Tulane calls you an alum the minute you take one class there. I think it is pretty common, actually. And if you want to figure out why, like with everything else, just follow the money... just one more group of people to solicit donations from.

And as an example, Tulane got a $30 million donation from one of the founders of Yahoo a few years ago, who is listed as an alum even though he didn't graduate from Tulane.

From the beginning, Kelly was considered a poor student, having been awarded his highest grade (a "C plus") for good physical hygiene.

Back in 1917, I kind of shudder to think what would constitute a C+ considering folks didn't shower everyday back then. They just ran a special about the midwestern bank robbers last night (History channel?) but didn't make the MSU connection.

Also, we count Will Clark, Raffy, Eric Moulds, Smoot, Mario Austin, and Jamont Gordon as alums, right? (Don't correct me if one of those names got a degree, I'm going off my, albeit poor, memory.)

Hell, about 30% of the poster's on Gene's page want to claim some sort of ties to Monta Ellis, until the great moped incident.

then left once accepted into their specific med schools (they are all in the medical fields from surgeons to dentist). They are not graduates by degree from MSU, but are graduates of the med school they attended. I know a couple of them contacted MSU after they graduated from med-school, & MSU granted them some type of degree, or something.

They all basically came to MSU to take the classes they needed to qualify to apply to their med-school, & didn't waste time w/ basketweaving or horse back riding class. Granted, these were the 30+ on their ACT type people.

Degree or no degree, I consider them alums

required a college degree for acceptance. Nursing school you could go to and get your Bachelors in Nursing. But not med school. Unless it has changed since 2000. Or I guess different schools can have different requirements.

...you can get into med school without a degree. However, most good schools are so competitive that having one is a must. Technically you don't, but you won't get into Vandy, Duke, UNC, etc, without one. Unless you're wicked smaht.

did graduate from Tulane.

David Filo, at age 6, moved to Moss Bluff, Louisiana, a suburb of Lake Charles, Louisiana. He graduated from Sam Houston High School and then earned a BS in Computer Engineering from Tulane University (through the Dean's Honor Scholarship) and an MS from Stanford University.

Side note: my sister dated his brother.</p>

there was another Yahoo guy who donated $30 million at the same time Filo did - Jim Clark was his name. He had gone to Tulane as well but didn't graduate, but he is still considered an alum.
