I have been frequenting this board for a number of years. I am not one to get into sparring sessions with people about our schemes, play calls or whether or not a coach should be hired or fired. However, as a life long Huskers fan I can no longer keep my emotions in check anymore. I am down right embarrassed and disgraced by the state of our football program. And worst of all, I am completely apathetic. This is the first season I can ever remember having zero interest in watching a Nebraska football game.
Our lack of competitiveness is appalling. I consider myself a realist and have never had delusions about being a consistent national championship contender anymore. But there is absolutely no reason why we can’t have a consistent and successful program like Wisconsin. Competing for divisions gives us a chance to win the B1G and then from there who knows.
I grew up in the 90s and my fondest childhood memories are the Immaculate Catch at Missouri, Tommie’s run against Florida and going toe-to-toe with the nation’s best. I had a VHS of Nebraska’s championship games that I would watch with my friends in my basement and dream of being one of the players. Today I have a 6 year old son who groans about watching football with dad because his team is just going to lose again. My wife went to Clemson and he is slowly becoming a die hard Tigers fan because he is getting to witness what I did when I was his age. If things don’t change quickly, the sellout streak will end and our program will become another also ran. At this point I don’t even care if we win, I just want to play clean respectable football against the nation’s best and know that on any given Saturday we have a chance. The last couple of years there has been little hesitantion when it comes to predicting the outcome of our games.
I used to care so deeply about wins and loses that it would affect my mood for a week. Now, I’ve shut off my TV and life goes on. I believe that with the right coach and commitment to resources we can eventually right the ship, but the question is have we already missed the boat?
