I'm not confusing anything. I can't help that you don't understand that a school whose enrollment is artificially limited due to available seats and a "lottery", is not the same as a school with normal geographic borders in a specific section of the district or county. That is why they shouldn't be classified the same.

What street or road is the cutoff for you to be able to enroll at Corvian? Don't worry I'll look it up.

General Admission Requirements
    • Residency: Students must be a resident of North Carolina. County boundaries or school attendance zones do not restrict enrollment.

This is a basketball post but how did seven 6-foot-4 to 6-foot-8 and players end up at Queens Grant who went 35-3 and won a 2A title?
That’s hitting on point. I doubt those players slept at night just down Idlewild Road in a “school zone” from the school. They probably came from all points of Mecklenburg County! Yadkin County won’t allow that.

obviously a charter school in charlotte would have different boundaries, however, Corvian can’t accept everyone who applies, and it can’t select students based on athletic ability. take your problem about the boundary stuff up with the state, not corvian. we control what we can control and follow all of our rules. once again, if you think we get all this talent for all these big name charlotte programs, we don’t. no new seniors, juniors, sophomores on this team and there were no new seniors in the class of 26. we have ONE player on our entire roster who played varsity football on a 7a/8a team.

i can’t speak on queens grant’s behalf but if those kids went through the same admissions process as everyone else, they’re doing nothing against the rules 🤷‍♂️ you can’t accuse a school of recruiting just because they have talented athletes and have success.

I think your missing the point though its clear some charters recruit for athletics anybody that doubts that is fooling themselves just look at the baseball basketball volleyball soccer wrestling final fours most years are littered with charters thats not a coincidence however the point there making is exactly what you said better athletes and more likely to find a better athlete pulling from Charlotte area even at random its unfair the class behind me in middle school before we went to the all county high school literally had 11 kids in it whats the odds that even 1 of those kids was an elite athlete regardless of weather they have played the game before you can coach up and teach well and I dont doubt your coaches do just that but you can't coach pure athleticism some kids have it and can be molded into elite players and some kids will work there tails off just to be average I think thats the point the odds of you pulling an elite athlete to mold are way way better than at a traditional small county school thats what makes it unfair I could care less if they played the sport before all of us have seen what that one special athlete that comes to a small school can do for multiple sports but we may get one of those every 10 years or so in Charlotte you have a chance to pull multiple elite athletes every year and thats what makes it unfair pure athleticism especially at the small school level can make a huge difference in how well your team does each year because we simply can't produce the same kid of athletes you'll find in a city like Charlotte. Even while following all the rules its an unfair advantage and thats what ruffles everyones feathers especially at the more rural small schools because we get great players hard workers who are dedicated and have good coaching but we can't suddenly make our 5'9 175lbs hard working kid into a 6'3 290 lbs with speed it doesn't work that way thats the difference

They've gone from recruiting players to recruiting fans. Just when you think you've seen it all.

Look, we get it. You have the ability to pull players from a pool of several million people. You can assemble talent by ways and means that the other 2a schools can't. We all recognize that you have a very talented team. Beat your chest all you want. We just don't respect you. We never will.
I gotta disagree about never respecting them. Corvian came to Murphy last year and was, by all accounts, very respectful before, during, and after the game. No complaints about them from me. They fell behind early and ultimately lost the game, but they never gave up, unlike a lot of other teams who have played against Murphy at the Hill over the years. I understand the argument about them being able to pull from a much larger population, and imho, they should be playing in a much higher classification (or in their own separate classification with other charters) , but right now, they are playing within the rules that the state of NC has put out there. Hate the game, not the player. It’s not their fault.

understood but once again, that’s not our fault. teams like murphy out size us, tarboro got insane speed , i can keep going but you get the point. yall think it’s fair to throw corvian in a conference with teams like weddington and have to play teams like grimsley in the playoffs just because we’re a charter school in charlotte? that doesn’t make sense to me. just because we’re in the same metropolitan talent pool as high level charlotte teams doesn’t mean they get in the school. i understand that point you’re trying to make tho.

No id say that wouldn't exactly be fair either I've always been more of a proponent that charters should be in the own classification not necessarily forced to play schools 5x there size I'm not sure there is a great solution either way and I agree not your fault but you can see why it ruffles feathers the wrong way its the hand we are all dealt so we have to deal with it its not a new problem its been happening in all sports besides football the charters are dominating the vast majority of the time the sad thing is not all charters are built equally either so its hard to just loop them together big difference between say a thomas Jefferson and the area they pull from and Corvian and the area they pull from but to pretend that there isn't any difference between a charter and a regular public school is just simply not true I'm not saying its the charters fault its just a crappy system without a good answer at the moment.

very valid, i’m happy to see an argument that’s different from “corvian is only good because they have kirby smart and recruits 5 stars from all over the country” it’s definitely tricky and i see where the frustration comes from but i hope everyone recognizes that corvian develops talent and has an excellent staff who have been coaching at a high level for years. end of the day just play ball.

No. What I believe is that if you are a Charter in Charlotte, and the average Charlotte school is playing 7A, then you should also have to play 7A. If you are in Winston or Greensboro and the average classification of your surrounding school system is 6A, then that is what you should also play. If you have 6A, 7A, 8A population pool, then nobody is impressed that you beat a team with a 2A population. In fact, its downright embarrassing.
Didn’t know winning football games was “downright embarrassing” now 😂😂😂😂😂😂 that’s just AWFUL

Appreciate it man! Hope we are fortunate enough to make it that far again. That QB y’all have is special! Can’t believe he was that good last year…..as a freshman! Unreal.
Love this energy. Like Cardinal Lover said, wish you guys the best of luck down the stretch and hopefully, we host you guys this time! What a game that turned out to be in the frigid cold.. quite the drive to get out there but made for some amazing memories!

Thank you. I wish y’all good luck too and hopefully we meet again. You’re right about the memories. That’s what makes it all worthwhile, and these nights are going by way too fast. Win or lose, gotta make the most of them.

Bro..Just stop. Everybody knows what's happening. If you think that "lottery" isn't rigged and those admins don't know who to enroll, you gotta Alot to learn. It happens all over the state. Look at Clinton a few years ago, hell, look at Tarboro every year for decades. And it's even easier today with social media. These kids know each other's name from two counties away by just tik-tok algorithms. Once a "feeler" is sent out from a player, parent, or even a coach using a account with a fake name, if interest is there they get the kids parents to make contact.I know this for a fact. The parents want their kid to go to the "blue blood" so their kid can get exposure as well as the kid going ring chasing. Another fine example in our area is Faith Christian in baseball. These private and charter schools are at a big advantage by not being limited by school zones.

corvian follows all the state rules and does nothing illegal. i don’t need to say anything more than that. hate the game not the player. you don’t think if corvian could recruit, they would have more than 1 player on their roster that has played varsity football on a 7a/8a team?

You’re right, Look at your schools baseball team every year with kids that live in Tarboro. It’s all just craziness.

That's the deal...Charters and private schools have free reign and are not saddled with the same restrictions.

This is exactly the issue, there are no rules for charters. As posted earlier, the only restriction is the student has to be a resident of NC. The hate isn't towards you (well maybe some with some of your posts, lol) or with Corvian as a school. The "hate" is with the state/NCHSAA not doing something about the unfair advantage that charters have. Again, no one said you or Corvian are breaking rules, but you have to admit that charters in general have an advantage.

If you've been around long enough, you've seen this same conversation every year. Normally it's basketball season but with charters getting better and winning more football playoff games, these conversations are going to continue until something is done to try and level the playing field.

so then yall can’t claim we recruit if yalls problem is that anyone can get into charter schools, that’s completely not our issue and we’re just playing the cards we are dealt. said this many times but nobody even came in the school this year for sophomores juniors and seniors and the class of 26 has no new seniors

genuine question, what charter schools not named corvian have been winning more playoff football games

Your very first sentence is exactly what the issue is. People can claim you recruit because anyone can get in. It's not like public schools where you have to live in the district and if Corvian allows anyone state wide, that's crazy. Most charters still require you to live within a certain mile radius or within a surrounding county.

In the past I know MICS and Thomas Jefferson had decent seasons. Not sure how deep in the playoffs either made it, but that was before there were 8 classifications. Bishop McGuinness is probably the original issue school and may have had a decent season or two but they're more of a basketball school.

obviously you can claim it but it isn’t true because we follow rules and as i said earlier, if we could recruit, don’t you think we’d have more than 1 player who played varsity football at a 7a/8a school? i am pretty sure all over corvians players live within a reasonable radius too to my knowledge.

got you

Well you argument that you only have 1 player from a 7A/8A school is pretty thin since they have only been in existence for 1 year..

You got no one. You have got to the heart of the problem. In a county like Graham(Robbinsville) or Clay (Hayesville) those schools have definitive boundaries. In those boundaries are a limited number of HS students. How many students are within 25 miles of Corvian? Whether they attend Corvian or not they are eligible. The pool of athletes you can draw from is many times greater than that available to most schools. This is a tremendous advantage. If someone started a charter score in Topton (a small community north of Andrews) then using the 25 mile radius they could draw students from Murphy, Andrews, Hiwassee Dam, Hayesville, Swain, Nantahala, Franklin and Cherokee. Given the SMC's rich heritage this would probably make a very good team. In summary not even close to the same playing field.

once again, we’re playing the cards we’re dealt. don’t hate the player hate the game! i get it. we’re in a big city with a bigger pool of athletes. we can’t hand pick those athletes and only a certain amount of them get in. of those who have got in, only 1 player on this current team has played varsity football on a high classification school. no new players were brought in this year. minus freshman, and i only think 1 freshman starts. i get the point you’re making, it’s not our fault

You are playing the hand your dealt but you should acknowledge that it is not a fair playing field. How would you feel if the nchsaa decide that classification for charter schools would be based on the number of students within their assigned 25 mile radius? Corvain would fly into a much higher classification. You would be fine with that because it is the hand your dealt? It may not be your fault in regards to the current setup, but don't expect everyone to like it.

It’s not hard to see and understand the resentment smaller schools have over this situation. To say, oh we’re just playing the hand we’re dealt is a lame excuse when you’re admiringly participating in an inequitable situation. Bottom line, any of the schools basically in the charter conference can pull from a huge pool of students. That said, lottery or no, is literally unlimited.
The Mecklenburg County population is 1.2 million. That’s your pool, or school zone. The population of Alleghany is +\- 11,500, Graham County (Robbinsville) is +\- 8000…. that’s their pool to pull from. So how fair is that when you compare to a metro county like Mecklenburg? Not to mention other counties with multiple schools that are only allowed to accept students in their school boundaries (without a waiting period). Meaning kids from Millers Creek don’t go to East Wilkes, or kids in Denton don’t go to North Davidson, and vice versa, even though they’re in the same county. And not to mention a lottery, where you’re eligible to apply out of a 1.2 million population, but the administration will pick and choose who they want and who they don’t.
it’s not an equitable situation or a level playing field, whether you’re participating and playing along in it or not. Schools that pull from such a large pool of students belong in a separate league, just as private schools belong in their own division.
Birdman’s argument is like saying, I play by the rules….but I don’t have any standards or convictions, I’m just along for the ride.

How can you sit here and say it’s a “lame excuse” when we are on no kind of board for North Carolina high school sports and have NO say over the decisions made for classifications? Genuinely what do you want us to do? You can be frustrated all you want but don’t send it at us. Sorry, let me go take it up with my fellow board members and spark a change!! Like no, that’s not an option
