A good beer and bourbon to try.

Let me preface this by saying I'm not a beer connoisseur. I get pissed when beer snobs talk down to me because I drink Miller Lite. If money was no object the beer I would prefer is Amstel Light on draft in a Dutch country, preferably Curacao. So I lay no claim to having a sophisticated palate for beer. That being said, someone turned me onto a beer sold at Tom Thumbs in the handle of Florida called Genesee. It's a macro brew out of New York and a little malty. It's clean a little sweet, and the best part, 6.99 a twelve pack. If you are of the light lager/cream ale cloth. It's a good cheap beer.

Next up is a bourbon I picked up. Again, I don't sniff my bourbon. I will drink bourbon neat if the mood strikes me or I'm tasting a brand new high dollar bourbon. But honestly I prefer in no particular order, 1. Relaxing after a hard day, on the rocks. 2. Drinking in social environments, mixed with Coke or D. Coke. I have been fortunate to procure a 15 year Pappy and a 12 year Old Van Winkle in the last two years. The 15 year was HOT, it was oaky, clean, but HOT. The 12 I have not had yet but I'm hoping I get a shot at it in Miami..hint.hint guy I gave it to. The guy that got me the 12 year turned me on to Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. It is the best mixing bourbon I have ever tasted. It is a little flat neat, and on the rocks make it very drinkable but doesn't expose it as a great drink, but coke products really accent it well. If anybody has a better mixing bourbon please suggest it I would love to get off this addiction to 45 dollar bourbon.

I don't mix with coke but there are plenty of bourbons under $45

I just picked up a bottle of eagle rare - about $30. Basil Haden is $40. 4 rose small batch, makers, bullit bourbon are good for $25-30.

As for beer. I drink whatever and am definitely no snob on that.

Weller 107 is the original wheated bourbon (Pappy was a salesman for them before he opened his distillery) and is available in MS for $23. Buffalo Trace owns Weller and Pappy now and they call Weller 107 Baby Pappy (it is 6 years old). Google Buffalo Trace and read about all their bourbons.

Nothing at all wrong with Genesee Cream Ale. A friend of mine when I was in the Army that was from PA used to always bring some back with him when he went on a pass or leave. I'd recommend Andygator from Abita as something new to try. Its a high gravity beer so not sure how FL treats them.

I've been looking for that ultra smooth, under $100 bourbon. When I get home after the new year I plan on buying Blantons. Any other suggestions?

I don't mix but best value bourbon is buffalo trace. I have been fortunate to acquire every year of pappy and my favorite is the 12 year. No burn hint of vanilla smoothest thing i have ever drank.

Blantons is a little pricey. Seriously try the Woodford Reserve Double Oaked.

I'm a woodford reserve guy. Jefferson reserve is a little more pricy but good.

The woodford reserve is good. You also can't go wrong with jack Daniels single barrel! It's great quality whisky under $50..

IMO you are throwing money away if you are pouring a 50 cent drink into a $50 bourbon. For shame!

I did some work at Genessee brewery/High Falls brewery in Rochester NY, brewers of "Genny" and Genny Light, Dundee Nut Brown and others. They acquired labatts, were co-packers for Sam Adams Boston lager in the early days, and also produce lots of fruity-liquor drinks - the wine cooler things. HFB was acquired/merged into North American Breweries, a giant owner of many brands.

The brewery is a really interesting place, in really old buildings located beside "High Falls " on the Genessee River.

They have a museum of '50's ads that feature a hot blonde or brunette depending on time-frame, Jenny - "ask for Jenny" - serving beers to her man in various venues - poolside, lawn chair, etc. - life as it should be.

Big fan of Whistle Pig if any of you get a chance to try it (not sure how available it is in the South). It's a rye. It's bottled in VT I think they're buying it out of Canada right now. They hired the former master distiller of Maker's Mark to run the operation. I think he's working on developing their own that grown in VT, but not totally sure. Regardless it's great.

Yeah, forgot to mention that Whistle Pig is best mixed with Mountain Dew or Cherry Pepsi. It goes great with a steak from Tico's that just slathered in A1

A buddy gave me a bootle of Buffalo Trace for Christmas. While smooth, it seems a little flat. I lit a cigar and it seemed to help kick up the flavor a bit for the bourbon and the cigar.

Not a fan of Buffalo Trace at all, taste grassy to me. I have been on a Woodford Reserve ride for a while now and none of the other's have dethroned it. Angel's Envy is about the only higher priced Bourbon I buy these days.

Stranahans from Colorado is pretty fine. Agree with the other poster on Angels Envy, particularly the rye. Blanton's is my standard "premium" bourbon.

Southern Comfort chased with Natural Light... I'm only half way kidding, I like Comfort straight and chased with any beer. I'm like others, no need to spend a lot of money on bourbon, I drink Makers and Comfort even though Comfort is a liqueur.
