1. Trump and Hillary were horrible candidates. Trump actually has some good ideas, but. his ego, his mouth, his lack of self control and his narcissism kept getting in the way.
2. Hillary was also horrible. Liar. Felon. Money grubber. Self interested. Untrustworthy. Unlikable. Shrill.
3. The Dems have move so far left, they've lost their roots. They used to be the party of the little guy. No more. They are the party of the elite. The elite on Wall Street. The elite in Silicon Valley. The elite in Hollywood. They've also become a party of minority groups, sometimes at odds with each other. They have lost the white vote.
4. Obamacare hurt the Dems. Obama's executive actions hurt Dems. Hillary's promise of even more executive actions hurt the Dems. Lost jobs hurt the Dems. A hurting middle class hurt the Dems. Small things like Keystone hurt the Dems. Their attack on good paying jobs in the fossil fuel industry hurt the Dems. The fight against religious freedom hurt the Dems. The evisceration of the military hurt the Dems. Political correctness hurt the Dems. Open borders hurt the Dems. I could go on and on but suffice it to say, the Dems are now a very far left party.
5. The Dems will have almost no bench. They lost 3 more governships last evening. In 2018, the Dems face a daunting election in the Senate having to defend so many seats and many in red states. There does not seem any short cut to help them to develop strong candidates.
6. Trump has a chance to make significant strides with minority groups, particularly blacks. Dems have done little to enhance black lives since LBJ. New approaches are needed. In education, in family structure retention, in rebuilding inner cities, in jobs, not crime, etc. Even with Hispanics, Trump has a chance to mend fences. Get rid of sanctuary cities. Deport felons, gang members, drug dealers, etc. Open up work permits for those working here to get them out of the shadows. Build a fence to defend wages for everyone including Hispanics.
7. Manchin is dead unless he converts. He can't beat a Trump lead march against him in 2018.
8. Dems have to regroup. Their reliance on minorities may be in jeopardy. They have no bench. Trump can make big inroads into those communities. They are in deep trouble in 2018.
9. The Dems savior seems to be Elizabeth Warren. She's a socialist. Very, very far left. Not where the Dems want to be. It will drive away key support from their base on Wall Street and Silicon Valley.
10. Strap on your seat belts. It is going to be quite.a ride.
11. My guess on Trump's initial actions:
a. Nominate conservative justice to replace Scalia
b. Jetison the Iran deal and reinstitute the embargo if Iran doesn't get rid of their nuclear program.
c. Repeal EPA edicts that destroyed coal.
d. Overturn Obama executive actions
e. Repeal and replace Obamacare
f. Build a wall and a virtual wall to greatly enforce border security.
g. Go after illegal immigrant felons for deportation
h. Reduce migrant immigration using extreme vetting
i. Scare the **** out of almost every enemy because they have no idea what Trump will do
j. Renegotiate trade deals
k. Remove the U.S. from the U.N climate deal.

One last observation. Obama was a thoroughly failed President. Obamacare will be gone. The Iran deal blown up. His executive orders reversed. What did he accomplish? Almost nothing.

7. I think Manchin's plans depend on whether he thinks Capito will try to challenge him for that seat in 2018. She's the one person who could beat him, I think. If he changes parties, it's to keep her from running against him.

8. I don't think the minority vote is suddenly going to swing to the GOP. That sector might not turn out in numbers as large going forward though. Changing the trend of voting in those areas takes more than a few years.

9. The Dems mouthpiece seems to be Warren. If I'm the Dems in 2020, I try to convince Cory Booker to run for president. He's a former mayor who fought a political machine to get into office. He was fairly successful as a mayor. He's been popular among folks in NJ in general and as their senator. He's more moderate than Warren by a long shot, but that's not a difficult task. He has a real shot to win, I think.

11. I think you are right about the justice to be named. I have doubts about the Iran deal and the wall. I think one of the first actions will be to repeal Obamacare. I'm not holding my breath on a replacement. With regard to the rest, I'll take a wait and see approach.

He's going to be our president, and he has a Republican Congress that should work with him - especially since several of those elected owe him for their wins. Let's see what he can get done. I'll look at his administration with an open mind. My only hope is that the tone of his campaign - the attacks and such - isn't the tone of his administration. The country is still divided, and that sort of approach won't heal any wounds. His long-term success is dependent on healing those wounds.

Manchin was inline to get some "reward" from a Hillary President. I think his announcement last night was a last ditch effort to appeal to the GOP. His problem McConnell (who's a massive douche) can't stand him, even though most of the Republicans in the Senate like him. So he's in a tough spot today.

Good post though PATX

You disappeared for nine months, show back up the day after the election, this place was a much better place without you.

PHUCK OFF!
See what I mean, we need to heal the wounds. I'll chalk this up as an illustration of my point about that. Way to go, country.

Since I proved that I'm less than knowledgable about WV politics these days, what is really the risk for Manchin if he doesn't change parties? Are there really candidates who could unseat him based solely on party affiliation? He's been a pretty traditional WV rep as far as I have seen. He's not part of the uber left leaning Dems, and he's fairly middle of the road in terms of politics. If he doesn't act as an obstructionist in a GOP led senate and can't be tied to the actions of a sitting Dem president, is he really in danger of losing that seat?

Obama had more cabinet members from the opposing party than any other president in history yet he was called divisive. Congress blocked anything and everything at every step of the way.

So it's supposed to magically go away overnight with the election of a new president?

I hope they never consider a Supreme Court nominee.

How's that?
Not going to happen. I suspect that Cruz will drop his idea that we should reduce the number of justices on the court too.

This is part of the problem. Democracy isn't about getting your way. It's about the people deciding. Please don't go into the popular vote issue either. That's not how presidents have been elected in the US. This election showed that the country is divided. We can keep fighting with each other, or we can look for common ground. One path is good for the country (no pun intended), and the other just serves as a distraction from the business that needs to get done. We have a new president elect. It may not be the person you wanted it to be. The president elect is still going to be America's president come January 20. Take a breath, get your head around the idea, and move on with your life.

Depends on the first steps the new president takes, just as it did with Obama. If Trump tells them to get in the back of the bus, I expect more of the same.

I don't think so. I think he'll hold onto it. He had professed he wanted to be Gov again, and I think would have run this go round if he wasn't worried about his popularity and if he didn't think he was looking at some nice position from Hillary.

I think he angered many with his support of Hillary after her announcement of her intentions to destroy coal and coal miners' jobs. Also, the Dem platform of unlimited/unrestricted abortions is not a WV value. If Trump helps the coal industry and campaigns against Manchin, I don't think Joe can win. Too much baggage from having to support Reid and some of his actions.

You may be right, but he ticked off a lot of very influential people by supporting Hillary after her comments. Justice will be governor for 8 years, right? Joe must win the Senate again if he is to stay in politics. Joe did very little to stop Obama's war on coal. West Virginians understand that. He supported a very unpopular Clinton. I think his safest route to survival is to switch. He can always claim he did not leave the Dems, they left him. He is pretty centrist and the Dem party is pretty far left.

Let's hope someone opposes McConnel. Hope Manchin is solid in his seat. He seems to be able to work with bothe sides. Would expect him to receive a pretty good seat. Would he oppose McConell?

Hillary is not a felon; yet. She may become one but must be charged with a felony and then found guilty and convicted of it.

I agree but from solely my perspective, she committed many felonies. There is a naval serviceman sitting in jail for one year for taking personal pictures in a submarine. He had no intent to share the photos with anyone, sell them or give them to our enemies. He did lots less than she did. But again, just my opinion. The law should be applied equally and fairly to everyone or we have no justice system.
