Does this show the bowl games are really nothing more than a scrimmage between 2 teams that nobody will remember was there?

That is how bowl games started....

It wasn't until 1973 that both of the main polls voted after the bowl season.
Before 1968 the final poll in both of the main polls was released before the bowl games.

Other factors were involved today but the time period for the bowl to be played wasn't there.

More like an overhyped exhibition to help certain cities generate revenue. Although that's not working like it used to judging by the crowd shots.

If they are worried about the attendance. I wonder how many people do they think will pay thousands of dollars to go with the risk of them canceling due to ESPN not wanting to bump the Myrtle Beach Poker Classic coverage?

What does this have to do with a canceled bowl game. Use to be 11 bowls and that was it. You actually had to win games to make it.

But the main question was about bowl game canceled and what the importance of the game.

They are entertainment. Don't expect anything more.

That was why I explained that at one time bowl games were exhibitions.

But... tourism and television forced bowl games to become a bigger part of CFB in the 1970's.
Mainly due to the AP poll waiting until after the bowl games to release their final poll starting in 1968.
This lead to the Sugar Bowl with Alabama and ND.
Bama was declared NC by one of the polls before the game but ended up losing to ND.
The AP poll declared ND the NC but even until this day Bama claims their NC from that year.

So....even in the early 1970's bowl games were considered exhibitions by most of CFB.

This is not anything new.

This is what WVUAllen doesn't understand....

Anyone can hold a bowl game and invite whoever they want.
If bowl games were not profitable they wouldn't exist.
So if you have 35+ bowl games it means that people are making money.
Every bowl game that didn't turn a profit went belly up or was forced to move.

Some bowl games are questionable...
But they still exist. ND has passed up bowl invites before. Texas told the bowl in St. Pete no in 2016. 5-7 Texas received an invite due to their APR but because Charlie Strong was fired they declined the invitation.
Think 5-7 Miss State? received the invite.

But.....it is very rare for schools to decline invites.
Once schools start declining bowl invites then what WVUAllen is selling might be true.
Until then bowl games will remain and probably increase.

Just like people pay money to see a group of guys play music, or a group of people perform a play.

But yes, bowls are just hyped up scrimmages.

15 would be a good balance imo. Take the top 30 teams in the polls and put them in bowls against each other. The top 8 go to the playoffs.

What difference does it make?

The bowls are a fun experience for the players. As a college footbal fan, I like having more games to watch.

I think it dilutes the experience having 5-7 to 7-5 record schools go to bowl games. Keep in mind everyone except a few schools plays a 1-aa tomato can so in some cases there have been schools be 4-7 vs FBS schools and if they're P5 go 2-6 or worse vs other P5. This is the ultimate "Everyone gets a trophy" in sports. It is really worse than the CIT basketball post season tourney.

Plus now with players sitting out for the NFL, which will continue to be the increasing norm, it's time to thin out the number of bowl games.

Either that or the games will look more and more like glorified closed practices because the attendance & participation amongst player is dropping like a stone.
