May had been discussed in a different thread, but in Cals post game interview he mentions it a few times. Felt like he was directing it at someone or a circumstance he’s dealing with? Idk, seemed pretty direct like a message. Thoughts?

IIRC he started it when talking about Wheeler not scoring and his reminding him that this isn’t “8 grade basketball” and not to worry about counting points. He then applied the same analogy to Oscar and stat counting for the NPOY race. “The points/rebounds all come when you stop counting/obsessing over them on the score sheet. That’s how I understood the comment.

It certainly sounded like both a general theme and a more specific statement applicable to one or two players. I got the sense that he was focused on Brooks, and maybe Tshiebwe too, when talking about not listening to "your 8th grade coach" telling you that you need to score more, etc.

Don't know how many times he mentioned 8th grade but he seemed kind of peeved the whole time about something. Kind of insinuating he has a high tech program compared to others. Kept mentioning people that down the program, and that the real fans need to enjoy this. Something has him riled up but wasn't sure about who he was talking about berating the program. Media, fans, other programs...???

I took the comments as a way for Cal to emphasize that at UK, SCORING is not the end all be all for determining your success. Cal is ALWAYS recruiting. So when he states NUMEROUS TIMES one of his current catch phrases, it's serves a purpose for him and the program.

He is calling out the ENTOURAGE around players that are CONSTANTLY in their ears about SCORING MORE. Cal is trying to convince players that scoring is NOT the ONLY thing scouts look at and in fact it isn't the FIRST in most cases. He wants his players to play their DEFINED(BY CAL) role and be HAPPY in it.

Cal views himself as a MASTER of psychology. This is why he gets SOOOOOO frustrated at fans, media, players and their families when his tactics on PERCEPTION don't work.

Not sure why Cal took time to delineate between his version of "true BBN fans" and those who level criticism of him in yesterday's post game. Only can guess someone or something has pricked his ego again.

I was way off then. I was maybe thinking a high school coach was in a players ear and coach was throwing shade at them. I’m sure the coaches from players past is always in their ear about “you need to score more”, or “you should be leading the team in scoring”. Just found it a bit strange. It’s not rocket science. He’s saying players who need to pad and pay attention to their stats rather than role are immature and not ready for the big time.
