Yeah I really hope grudges aren't being held after all these years. I mean Chuck got decent amount of playing time for a Freshmen. We even heard from walkons last night.
Small thing I guess but I just noticed the entire roster participated. Loved they had Mike's wife and son say a few words.

I'm pretty sure Chuck was averaging double figures the following year when he decided to transfer. Does anyone know why he transferred?

I think there should be an SEC storied on the 2010 team. Sure 2012 won the title but 2010 changed Kentucky basketball.

Wonder if Cal watched it and got some additional perspective of the impact of that great team?

Dean Smith was a punk and maybe the most overratd coach ever. 4 corners chicken ball. 2 titles with enough talent NBA for 2-3 teams.
Jordan, Worthy, Perkins, Daugherty, Stackhouse, Wallace, etc. I just a named a few off the top of my head.
Sounds familiar to a coach I know who only has one title.

Quite a bit different. Dean Smith was at one of the Blue Bloods of college basketball for well over 30 years. Cal has been at a Blue Blood for 12 years. Judging coaches by how many national titles is a horrible way to judge them. Only 4 times since the mid-80's has the overall #1 seed won it. First of all the tournament is a one loss your out crap shoot that the favorite seldom wins. Secondly, very few coaches have won multiple titles (14 total, only 3 active coaches). Thirdly, there are plenty of great coaches that never get the chance to win one because they are not a a big-time basketball school.

To be fair, Smith won 2 titles in about 36 years. If Cal stays here for another few years (looking likely) and doesn’t win another title (hopefully not but looking iffy) his conversion rate at a blue blood will be just as poor as Smith’s.

Also there have been 4 schools repeat titles over the past 12 or so years, and only one first time winner that I can recall (Virginia which may win another before all is said and done) so winning titles is not so random as it’s made out.

Discounting titles is typically something done by those who don’t have as many as they’d like (cough Kansas fans). I didn’t see much of it around here in Cal’s first years when it looked like he’d win 2 or more. But now that he’s underachieved titles are random, a little too convenient to me.

Not discounting titles. No one wants to win them as much as me. But, I've been around long enough to know it's a terrible way to rate a coach. Again, only 4 overall #1 seeds have won it since the mid-80's. Lots of luck involved too. Look at UVA, they had to pull off miracles to beat Purdue and Auburn just to get to the title game and if they miss one shot against Texas Tech, they lose that game. UNC's last title, they hit a shot with less than 1.5 seconds against us or they might now have won that year. Villanova hit a 25'er at the buzzer to beat UNC. You have to be very good, but you also have to be lucky at times too. I can't remember the last time a time just breezed to the title. I guess we came as close as you can in 2012.

It's called coaching.

Did you hear the players talk about the adjustments Coach Hall made against Florida State and against Michigan States zone defense to get open shots?

Those were in game adjustments to counter what the other coach had implemented to stop our normal offense.

How any coach can be so arrogant to think he doesn't have to make adjustments during a game and can simply out talent the other team blows my mind.

Especially during NCAA tournament.

Hall was better when Dicky Parsons was an assistant.

I agree. I also thought Pitino suddenly became a better coach when Jim O'Brian came on his staff.
I actually think Cal losing KP hurt his " coaching" ability more than all the other issues, Covid, youth, etc.
Not being able to evaluate talent or having an assistant coach that can was the biggest problem this year.

I think titles tend to seem random when taken one year at a time. However, when looking at programs and coaches over the course of years, you see that the systems developed bear some pretty consistent fruit.

It’s really about the systems developed to create championship caliber teams imo, rather than one individual year of great performance and luck. Those years don’t usually happen in isolation.

Sometimes the systems aren’t so fair. Duke’s AD has a wide tree of protege administrators who have served on the selection committee over the years. Is it any surprise they don’t get too many brutal draws? Similarly Cal’s biting sarcasm and against the world attitude has bore some bitter fruit in how refs and the committee treat him.

Something that struck me from the SEC storied program was the fans did not seem to be all decked out in blue like later on. I never went to a game until the 1980s and by then it seemed the fans were always in blue. Doesn't look like on the SEC storied that the fans are 100% decked out in blue or even 60%. Does anyone know when this changed or am I just imagining things?

That was before Nike and other athletic apparel companies came along so there wasn’t a lot of stuff to choose from back then. I remember when I got a Kentucky shirt it was pretty special.

Now that I remember I think most of my early Kentucky stuff was gray.

I had some Kentucky Football sweatshirts from the 70's until just recently. Pretty sure they came from JC Penny's and the blue color then was completely different than now. Deep, dark blue. Almost Penn State blue of today.
I said this a while back. UK used to be more of a Navy Blue, now it's like a royal blue I guess.

I recorded it but looks like the softball game previously screwed it up and it cutoff during the Duke game. One thing I'd love to see again are some of the full games from Memorial, some great video footage from back. And it was great to see Denny Trease, a big part of my childhood was going to the game and then come home and watch the replay on WKYT.

3 of the 4 losses were by 2 points. They lost to Utah in the UKIT after Hall suspended 3 of our top 6 players. Then they lost to UT in OT before another loss to them by 2.

Then in the Elite 8 they lost to UNC who shot 36 free throws to our 16. Unc made 33-36 in that game.
Poor Utes have been paying for that win ever since.
