1958 to 78 was a pretty big drought. Only 4 final 4's in that period also, counting 78, which was the only championship.

We were the best team in 1978 at the beginning and at the end. The guys had lots of pressure on them to stay at the top where they were expected to be at the end. Givens, Lee, Robey, and Phillips made up a stellar recruiting class that went on to mix with multiple players over the course of four years who were great complements to their 1974 class. I was at UK all four of their years and can attest to the fact--having never missed a home game during those years--that we were treated to some great thrills and chills. They were runners-up to UCLA in year one, won the NIT the next year, lost in a tough NCAA game against North Carolina in 1977, and then won it all in 1978. Pivotal, of course, was the inclusion of transfer sophomore Kyle Macy as a point guard in 77-78. Joe B. Hall didn't quite get the credit then, but over the years has finally gotten his due, and that's a good thing. He lacked a little bit of the charisma needed to mitigate his taking over for Coach Rupp, but in retrospect, he did a more than credible job following a legend, and you cannot argue with one championship and a runner-up finish. He was also very close in 1984 with a team led by Sam Bowie.

Our
Sam Gilbert's money had even more to do with us loosing than the refs. Without Gilbert's money, ucla woukd not have had half of the platers that they had on that team.

They had a great 11 years and Wooden is a legend. For people that really know 11 years isn’t that long versus how long UK has been good. Just hate they have those titles

Wooden wouldn't have been **** without Gilbert's money. UCLA during that time was the biggest cheating program of all time.

Wasn't that show a joy to watch. It brought back so many memories. The campus in my time, the players when they were young, the horrible winter of 1978, and those awful 70's clothes. That made me laugh. How thrilled we were when we won it all. Considering the dreadful season we just had , it was fun. Glad to see the tribute to Mike Phillips at the end.

Outstanding!
Best team that I’ve witnessed at UK. Senior leadership, tough, confident, skilled, could play any style.
Shooters, multiple defenses, fearless classy guys, close, experienced and on and on.

Hope Cal watched it. Some lessons to be gained from it. He could learn some things and maybe get a few in state leaders on his next teams along with developing some experience.

Fans really care about those guys and they felt it.

I watched the Florida state game last night. That was ballsy of Joe Hall to bench our starters.
It's called coaching.

Did you hear the players talk about the adjustments Coach Hall made against Florida State and against Michigan States zone defense to get open shots?

Those were in game adjustments to counter what the other coach had implemented to stop our normal offense.

How any coach can be so arrogant to think he doesn't have to make adjustments during a game and can simply out talent the other team blows my mind.

Especially during NCAA tournament.

53 as well about to turn 54 and I don't disagree.
I will say they would at least take 96 98 12 to the limit in a 5 or 7 game series.
Imagine Macy or Shidler with a 3 point line.
People will say the game is played different today than back then. I agree it is.
But I will say great players will be great in any era. You still have to put the through the goal.
This team was one of the best had good balance, a decent bench great guard play.

Thinking back Aleksinas left the team mid season the next year. Don‘t think he and Joe B had a good relationship but you would think that could have been put aside after all these years.
Yeah I really hope grudges aren't being held after all these years. I mean Chuck got decent amount of playing time for a Freshmen. We even heard from walkons last night.
Small thing I guess but I just noticed the entire roster participated. Loved they had Mike's wife and son say a few words.

My dad has dementia. I told my mom it was going to be on and to make sure he watched it. My phone rang last night a little after 10:00pm. It was like he was back on campus in the 70's. I loved watching it and he loved it even more. A couple random things:

1. Those unis are my favorite and loved when they brought them back in the 2000's.
2. Loved that center court logo in Memorial
3. That damn rubber floor at UT

Younger fans probably won’t agree with this but I think this team is the best Kentucky team in my lifetime (53 years old).

They could play with any of the teams but I just think our 96' and 2012 teams where way too athletic for them. The teams we had trouble with, Alabama, LSU, were our both losses in the regular season. And in the NCAA tournament, we very easily could have lost to FSU, Michigan State and Arkansas. Those were probably the 5 most athletic teams we played that season.

Really looking forward to it. Hope it's not a hit piece though.

Joe B's best class and one of the best classes at UK ever. 3 E8's, 2 FF's, 1 NCAA title and a NIT title.
Givens, Lee, Phillips, and Robey. Super Kittens.

The Super Kittens were Kevin Grevey, Jimmy Dan Conner, Mike Flynn, Bob Guyette and company who were SR's when that class were freshmen.

Wrong. He was not on the hot seat.

I know it's been a while, I was a Senior in high school but he indeed was. If he had lost that game to FSU in the first round, the pressure would have been so great it would have probably been his last game. Especially losing the amount of talent he had that year.
