Gretna and Altavista combined to shoot 72 FTs last night. Refs must have gotten paid for the number of fouls called.

Or play defense with your feet could be another option
When I'm at the games majority of the time they are. But even clean blocked shots or steals whether reaching or in full court traps during a double team. I have seen a ref call a foul from the other end of the court when it's not even his call just to impose himself in the games.

Fouling in basketball is like holding in football. It can normally be called on every play. High school basketball needs a shot clock, and coaches need to be required to be seated during live ball. I see too many coaches try to call every play on offense and defense, in addition to trying to referee game also.

I hate how officials control the games in 2A every 4A and 5A school I go see play the officials don't impose their will on the basketball game. Call the obvious but let's not just have both teams shooting 72 free throws a game
Had a game where a ref called a block. Went to the table the person running the clock said "I thought you called charge". Both team were lined up at the FT line to shoot, the refs meet and say charge. The other ref came over an acknowledged it was a parent running the clock and that it was a block but he couldn't change the call. We need refs that know how to call a game not listen to the crowd or people running the clock.

I have been saying the same thing. High school basketball needs a shot clock. Is that something the coaches vote on or something that will never be changed?

Well I only wish those officials would referee the games in the 2A they really leave their mark in the game especially Campbell County areas

The NFHS sets the rules. I doubt if many coaches would like a shot clock. It would mess up their half court offense where they try to call every play like in football.

Means they will hve to be efficient in their offense a set play takes less than 15 seconds to run a shot clock of 35 seconds their should be a shot going up every 35 seconds in high school. Prevent holding the ball in late games. .56 left on the clock down 3 points teams shouldn't have to foul. They should be able to play good defense and get a stop.

Back in the day when Gretna was good I went to Hertiage in Lynchburg to scout some team. There were 3 fouls called entire game. A few days later Gretna had same 3 Officials. I seem to think both teams were in the bonus on FTs early in 2nd quarter.

I haven't seen teams hold the ball recently except near the end of the game. Most teams shoot or turn it over within 35 second. Amelia/R-H game - 75 FT. Both teams attacking the basketball. Pretty legit on the calls.

There was a 3A or 4A game last week where the score was 49-47 in 7 overtimes because the teams held the ball. Was only a combined 12 points scored in the 7 OTs and 10 of those came in the 2nd OT.

I would say that probably is not the norm based on my observations lately. Most want to shoot as soon as they cross half court with most not coming close to going in. Even more often they would turn it over if they tried to hold it. I find it difficult to watch because there is little team involvement. In fact sometimes it appears it doesn't even matter who wins but who had the longest shot go in or the best dunk or the most blocks.

I'll disclose my 2 cents. I think the refs make some of the worse calls. Every block shot, a foul isn't committed. Some of these kids play good D, then they are robbed by the officials, of their hard work.
