Rest in Peace

That 1990 Rose Bowl team will always be special to me since I was still too young to appreciate the 1981/85 Rose Bowl teams in real time. By 1990 I was following along and knew when they gave Miami a game that it could be a special year. Foster was a big part of that defense. Hayden had some really great linebackers that didn't make it far in the NFL, so they kind of get overshadowed by the Ferentz era guys that did, but they were every bit as good at the college level.

Had to look this up in an old media guide......... Senior Year (5A Texas) 16-0, 9 defensive shutouts, 122 solo tackles w/47 assists, 8 int., 5 fumble recoveries, 4 blocked punts. (In one game had 19 tackles before halftime and another game had 3 int.) Class 5A State Champions (X2), Texas Player of the Year, #1 LB in the nation, and 1st Team All-American. An absolute beast and arguably the biggest recruit of Fry's tenure (or Kirk's)! RIP Melvin.

A great Hawkeye, had to love those shoulder pads. RIP big guy!
I was shocked when I saw this news about Melvin. He seems so young to be gone. He was always one of my favorite hawkeyes. Great recruit, great player, great man afterwards.
