What makes you think where better than this? 58th ain't a bad spot to be in.
Well since there are 64 power 5 teams that wouldn't be saying much about the state of the program now would it?
McIllece Sports ranked second last year in a long list of services (including the likes of ESPN, Sporting News, Sports illustrated, Lindy, Athlon, Phil Steele...ect) predicting standings. Over the last 3 seasons combined they rank third.
This season they have us at preseason 14 as a second place finisher in the Big 12.
Do I agree?? Doesn't really matter....just pointing out that respectable sources outside this forum are showing praise for WVU (so it's not a dream).
....by the way... ....of the services/magazines that so far reported WVU sits at the average spot of 31. Not bad and certainly not far from the top 25.
Would be nice if we were a "fringe Top 25" team this year...but I guess that means the program has fallen to a point where being close to being at least so-so can be celebrated.
I agree 'fringe Top 25' or even top 25 isn't exactly worth a celebration but flirting with great seasons (top 10-15) increases the exposure of the program and certainly shows that our ultimate goal is within reach rather than being a complete 'California dream' (whatever that is...).
Cute story!!! WVU predicted 58th in the country in another ranking. Hey quick question for ya. What was WVU end year ranking the last couple of years? Hmmm when you're done thinking about that one tell my why WVU would be respected this year. I'm hoping WVU surprises but please don't talk about the team this year like they deserve top 25 or even close.
I made it clear that my opinion didn't matter (just like yours doesn't) regarding rankings.... ...just that people/services/magazines who rank teams for a living have a diff opinion than you/us.
I also gave a respected source who has been more accurate than some of the most referred sources on this topic. You want to hang your hat on the Orlando Sentinel... ...have at it.

Trying to establish more credibility from one ranking service versus another is silly. "I have a respected source" is also comical.
I actually gave an average rank of several 'respected' sources. ...and it's from a site that ranks each 'service' from the early 90's. They keep track of preseason predictions compared to the final polls.
Funny... ...the Orlando Sentinel didn't make their long list of rankings to follow. ...and they update them often.
The diff between us... ...I'm open to multiple sources.... ....and you're sprinting backward saying comparing rankings is suddenly silly.
There's much more different about the two of us than what you said. WVU deserves no top 25 respect until 5 or 6 games into the season. Any service or person that thinks otherwise is idiotic.

I wasn't debating why WVU 'should be in' or near the Top 25... ...simply pointing out that respected publications are putting us there (I also made it clear I may not agree). Are those publications 'emotionally attached' ?

Just wondering where you would rank wvu preseason? Im not surprised that there not a preseason top 25 team nor was I expecting it but to say there 58th is a bit off the mark if you ask me. There are 64 power 5 teams and at 58th that would place them near the bottom of the power 5. I would say the team is probably at least average by power 5 standards.
Based on where WVU has been the last couple of years maybe 40-44 to start with. Check back in around week 5 or 6 and if performance is good with no losses or at most one that wasn't horrific I would think 20-25 ranking wouldn't be a reach.

Many people/companies who make a living (aka professionals) predicting college football have a diff opinion than you (again, maybe diff than mine too).
