Everyone jumping the gun here and assuming Drew would take the job. I still don't think he would.
I *really* hope he doesn’t. No offense to him. Seems like a great guy. I just don’t want him here. And even if I did want him here, the way Mitch apparently must have started reaching out to get approval from the university to offer him the literal split second he heard Cal was leaving, without even giving any of the A-listers a second thought or a chance to turn us down……

It’s just slimy. Wrong. Borders on evil, though I guess you can’t call a thing like that actually evil in a world this messed up. Still can’t be very far from evil. Highly, highly, highly messed up.

So if Drew and Hurley shoot us down, and Wright and Oats have said no......who's left?

Lloyd and Golden would be my next choices.

Both still a little unproven but both young and hungry as well. I’d be excited with either of them.

Cal was one of the best recruiters ever at UK. For some reason the coach at Duke seems to be another cal. I don't how anyone will compare to cals great recruiting era.

It doesn’t matter how many recruiting banners you get if you can’t coach them it’s useless…

The scenario that a few of us have been predicting since this all began. "Be careful what you wish for" wasn't a defense of Cal, it was just a realistic evaluation of the situation.
Yup! We should have just stuck with Cal out of fear of what may happen next! At least with Cal we knew we’d lose and not have to worry about March. Far less anxiety when your team isn’t playing in the second or third weekend.

I wished for Cal to be gone and LOVE that it came true. The next coach simply can’t do worse, so it’s only uphill from here.

So you don’t think Donovon will lose some games too?
I don’t see Donovan threatening to beat the **** out of a fan. And Hurley isn’t coming. Oats isn’t coming. So we better hope we get Drew or Billy D. If we end up with a Mark Pope, it’s not a good look.

I

Don't think he is coming, but that interview has nothing to do with it.

Coaches say that stuff and leave the next day all the time.
Dude, he’s not coming here. I hate to say it, maybe it’s not as desirable a destination as we think it is. Who knows, we can blame Cal for that. We blame him for everything.

Hurley has a chance to 3 peat which is unheard of in college and professional sports. I can’t see him leaving. He will get a 2-3 M bump soon. I doubt UCONN will screw that up but they could.

This really isn’t about UK it is more about the state of college sports. Coaches are all paid market rates. They have good relationship at the current place. The new environment makes it is possible to win anywhere.

Louisville’s AD said it best there is never a day off, your family will be impacted and it will drain you but if you can handle that it is the best place to coach. Amplify that by 10
with UK. I think Drew gets consumed in that environment. Donovan could handle it. Pearl could handle it. Beard could handle it.

It isn’t as easy as all us fans think it is to hire the right coach.

Finally someone hit the nail on the head. It’s so unprecedented because both parties wanted to part ways, but there’s a legit shot the program takes a step back. We really need to stop with the “no one coach or player defines a program” ****. This is the NIL and portal era.

Hurley makes a $5 Million a season and Donovan is in his last season contract with the Bulls after the 2024 season making approx. $6 million a year. Go after either one and bring one in fairly fast so they can get started on the restructuring of the Roster for the Next Season! I am sure UCONN will be giving Hurley a nice raise after winning Back to back championships but still would be a Homerun hire on either of these Head Coaches Hurley or Billy Donovan.
I will say if Hurley turns this down, it’s probably his last stop in college.

Let me spell out something: Dawn Staley makes 5x the salary of Geno Auriemma. That is crazy.

Hurley’s salary may be peaking, so you have to make him say no to the university.

Hurley isn’t coming here. There is no reason other than a little more money. He has UConn rolling and has wayyyy less pressure. Move on people. While you’re at it forget about Donovan also.

Whoever we get needs to know A: How to Coach a game and what are the best players on your ACTUALLY TEAM and B: Have B@11s of Steel and not run and hide when things get rough.

As a fan base we deserve better than the past 5 years and I am sorry many people cannot accept that. It became far too obvious VERY EARLY Coach Cal was way more concerned about the players than he was the name of the front of the jersey.. Now, I am not saying don't care about the players... I am saying there is a happy medium, even in this age/era of college basketball.

If you look at the teams that have won lately they sure weren't stacked with early first round talent throughout the year, they knew how to play team ball. We are going to need to get a Coach who understands that and realizes that to win it takes team ball and not individual dribble drive crap that has been trash for many years in College Ball. NIL changes much and many quality and PROVEN transfers will be available year after year so we are not going to be solely reliant on highly ranked 1st year kids to dominate.

This is going to be a fun ride and I suggest, as a fan of the TEAM and UNIVERSITY we enjoy the ride.

remember no individual player, coach, donor, AD is BIGGER than the university.

Make that offer to Donovan too. That gets Donovan here it's twice his salary now .
This is the move I'd like to see. Hurley is probably unattainable.

Donovan would bring instant stability. He's coached on the college level before, but he offers something no other college coach (ironically, except for Calipari) can offer, and that's a direct insight into the NBA.

Donovan's succeeded wherever he's been. He's only 58 years old, so you can still get 6 to 8 years out of him (unlike Pearl who is about to his his golden years).

Throw $10 to 12 million/year at Donovan, and he'll come.

I agree. I literally said I don't think he is coming.

You just can't take anything coaches say publicly like that at face value.

UK is still the top job in college basketball. That doesn't mean you'll get whoever you want though.
