I know bracketology isn't worth a hill of beans this time of year (or any time of year for that matter, outside of maybe a week or two)... But Lunardi putting the CATS as a five-seed is ridiculous. Maybe he's just making an S-curve based on Kenpom's rankings? Even still, the AP poll and overall sentiment about a team does matter because the committee is made up of humans. Obviously, just keep winning and everything will fall into place. But a 5-seed is crazy to me.

It's one of those things where the Miami win doesn't look as good as it did initially and the UNCW loss is a bad one.

I don't think he's placing us there for clicks. It's just given the current resume, where we probably are at right now.

But it's silly to look at these things mid December.
I agree with the logic. But it does look silly for the #9 team to be a five-seed. Alas, Go CATS.

The Cats are likely in the 4 seed range right now.

The UNCW loss will be an albatross and why there is little room for error if they want a 1 or 2 seed.

The reality is that because of current resumes and upcoming conference schedules, the 1 seeds might be easy to predict- Purdue, Kansas, Arizona, Uconn. Would be shocked if those aren’t the 1 seeds when it’s all said and done.

If you look at the NET rankings, this is how "bracketology" is calculated. Tennessee number 8, Auburn number 20, UK number 27. Right around the seed line you would expect, unfortunately, because of NET rankings. We will rise in that ranking with more Quad 1 wins.

It's not as simple as a win-loss record and SOS. Other factors come into play. One of those factors that Lunardi and others are surely looking as is the wildly different type of offense before the UNCW game, and everything afterwards. If we play small and just use the bigs as rim protection/rebounding, then THAT team is capable of blowing the better teams out of the water. If we go with the pound-it-in on every possession and make every game a rock fight, then that can not be viewed as a recipe for success.

He's getting the exact reaction he wants. "Hey, things are slow, let's put Kentucky as a 5 seed to get attention and stir things up, knowing good well it's only December and means NOTHING."

This is the reason, it’s to get clicks

It’s also why MLB prospect lists are geared toward big market teams. It’s meaningless and just a way to get clicks

Kansas is 13th in Net Rankings and a 1 seed and Gonzaga and UNC is 36th & 37th in Net Rankings and a 5 seed with us. 🤷‍♂️

If Cal would mostly schedule historically quad 1 teams for OC part of the schedule , sort of like Tenn ,Ala and some others do, we would have a high net and kenpom ranking. It appears that loosing to q1 teams don't hurt you. We might loose a few more games but we would be benefited in the long run come March.

Ya'll crack me up. We've not really beaten anyone yet other than UNC. Took a horrible loss on our home court. Squeaked by in another nobody game.

I think a four seed is fair right now.

That’s is doubtful as their starting point guard did not play. They have 2 Top 10 wins, the other loss was a narrow one to a Top 3 team the led by 14 in the second half. Nonsense.

The quad system is a complete farce.

Proof of the multiverse. Over in this universe UK is still playing an up-tempo, lots-of-3s, 5 out offense.

I don't pretend to understand it. Indiana State is sitting at 18 in the NET and a 12 seed in Bracketology. lol. But with the teams I named, it's "accurate". Throw all logic out when it comes to Bracketology. haha

I HATE puke orange as much as the next guy, but look at their schedule vs ours and as you said we struggled with St Joe's and lost to uncw. If Cal is going to persist in scheduling these type teams with his nba/oads then you need to be having lopsided scores instead of struggling with them. Not a good way to have pollsters gushing over you. Noone to blame but him. Won't be surprised if we don't struggle with U6 to help out KP.

NET is stupid
Kenpom until Feb is stupid
AP poll has some week-to-week jerk reaction stupidity
Lunardi is extra stupid
Really the committee has proven to be stupid most times.

It’s fairly rare to see a huge discrepancy between the AP poll and the committee, but since one has nothing to do with the other, it does happen. The one I remember most vividly is 2002 Gonzaga finishing the season 6th in the AP and getting a 6 seed for the tournament (they lost in the first round, so maybe the committee was right). The SEC has enough good teams this year that I expect our projected seed will improve if we win enough to stay around the top 10 of the polls though.

I think it just proves his biases creep in for some teams seeding.

I don't know. I mean with Kenpom he has a breakdown of his model by month and how well it does and while it gets better towards the end of the season, it's not really all that much different from the beginning.

A T10 team as a 5 seed defies every bit of logic. Place a T10 that low and watch the griping commence from everyone.

If UNCW is an albatross, as you say, what is Ga. Tech? They beat Duke and are 156 NET. UNCW is 133, yet Duke is a 6 seed just one worse than UK.
