I'm ok with it staying the way it was, I'm ok with it the way it is. If someone wants to stand around on the perimeter and dribble for 10 seconds, that's less time to get a good shot off. I don't know why they changed it this year. Explanation?

I have seen great defense played, a 5 second violation called, momentum shifted and it completely changed the outcome of the game...great in your face on the ball defenders "Ulis comes to mind" should be rewarded

5 seconds was a pre shot clock era violation for the stall ball teams that made the game horrible to watch. With the shot clock being shorter, it doesn't make sense to punish a team for not advancing the ball.
This is correct.

They are rewarded, the offense has 5 less seconds to shoot on the shot clock now, you can't have it both ways.

Stupid rule. Would rather the officials be looking for fouls than counting to 5. Try to do your job today while continuously counting to 5 over and over and over the entire time.

I agree 100%. If you want to clean up college basketball then simplify the rules for the officials. I feel the same way about the 3 second call in the lane. They should take that call away and tell the official on the baseline to watch the excessive contact underneath from both offense and defense.

Another think I would like changed is one that Bilas has mentioned. If you get an offensive rebound the shot clock should reset to 20 and not the full 30.

I think the rule was too hard to judge.... "closely" guarded is not very descriptive and 5 second counts are not Refs strong suits either... I'd rather the ref concentrate on hand checking, walks, carries, illegal screens etc..etc..

Take the team that is at home and the home team is making a comeback, the fans are going crazy, the refs make that 5 sec call in 3 seconds, lol.

Am I mistaken or does the 5 second rule still apply if the ball is being held but not dribbled? Thought I heard a commentator make that statement the other night. Of course I could be mistaken, has happened in the past according to my wife.

I'd much rather 3 seconds in the key actually be called consistently....it's college basketball's version of traveling in the NBA.

I hope they bring it back next season...I think a player should be rewarded for playing great defense....Thoughts?

The 5 second rule may be the dumbest rule that was ever put into basketball. There is absolutely no reason why a player should be penalized for possessing the ball. There is a shot clock. The defensive player should play defense for the entire time. It makes no sense to reward a player just because he happens to play good defense for 5 seconds. Nor should a player be penalized because he is capable of dribbling and avoiding the defender. In the shot clock era the 5 second rule has no place.

I'd prefer if college would adapt the NBA's rules for zone defenses. To quote Bomani Jones: "Zone is for cowards."

I like the Defensive 3 second rule because it keeps you from camping out in the paint and not actively playing defense.

The NBA doesn't have zone defense rules, but yes I would like to see a defensive three seconds just like there is an offensive three seconds. Why does defense get to have one lazy person but not offense?

Agreed, closely guarded is subjective and I don't want refs making decisions any more than they have to.

I always use the five second rule. Sometimes if I dont see anyone looking I might use a ten second rule. Im not big on wasting food.

Glad it's gone. One less opportunity for a ref to screw up. The last one I remember seeing called was during our Sweet 16 game vs Ohio St in 2011. One of the d-bag refs called Liggins for this late in the game. Bad part was, he (the d-bag ref) didn't even count to 5 before he blew the whistle. Could have been a HUGE turnover in a game where every single possession mattered.

I was watching the Indiana game a couple of nights ago and there was a 5 second call. I was like, I could of swore the 5 second rule is out this year but, they called it. How is that?

I like the new rule. It strongly rewards teams with good ball handling, good FT percentage guards in late game situations.

Considering today is Thanksgiving, when I read the OP...I thought this was going to be a discussion about how quickly we must pick up food dropped on the floor and still be allowed to eat it.

if they are dribbling there is no 5 second call...if they are just holding the ball there is...I just heard that last night on a game

By the logic of these posts we should get rid of the ten second backcourt violation too?

Didn't know it was gone but glad to see it go. With the shot clock change, it makes perfect sense to get rid of the 5 second call. You are going to, or should, have less sanding around this season just dribbling.

The NCAA is trying to increase scoring, and getting rid of the ticky tack defensive rules is a good way to start

What would it hurt? With a shot clock I see no reason that a team would need to get the ball over the half court line, they still have to shoot in 30 sec.
