Mitch should have started him at around $4 to $4.5 million.

Use the rest of the money on NIL. It's the only way he's going to get players here. No one even knows who he is.

So if they were offering Hurley 12.5 mil, that should leave 7 mil for NIL, right? One can only hope.

SMFH….why do people not understand it doesn’t work like that? UK cannot find anything related to NIL. Saving money on a contract does NOTHING for NIL

Who says? You can ALWAYS move that money around.

If not. It can always be spent un updating the facilities. That's what should be done next.

That’s still 60% less than what we were gonna pay Hurley so the $ should be there to build a roster now. It’s what, about 30% less than Cal and his underachieving arse. It’s also not gonna be terribly expensive to get out of I wouldn’t imagine.

I was thinking 3-3.5. I don’t think anybody at UK is thinking. It seems they took advice from former players and Pitino of all people and wanted this over quickly. Mitch has joined the microwave society.

He already made that much at BYU we had to give him a raise especially for a position like this. I think it’s very feasible and reasonable. I’d like to see the buyout.

That's the one upside in all of this.

We were going to pay Hurley $12.5 million/year, and one would have to assume there would have been $2 to $3 million a year for NIL with Hurley for a total war chest of $15 to 16 million.

With Pope at $5.5 million, shouldn't that leave around $10 million for NIL?

That would put UK at the highest NIL salary cap in the nation. You could get the best portal players if the boosters are all-in on Pope.

Top 10 paid coach in America and probably shouldn't have even been a top 10 candidate in the job search. Mitch is an idiot
We still have to pay our coach what we would competitively for market purposes I would think.

I personally believe the staff he hires and the war chest will determine what he does here honestly.

The booster thing IS concerning for sure.

But 1. Let's give them some time to come around, I doubt they are just going to stop ALL funding. And 2. If he starts to win or if he's able to beat Duke in November, the money will flow in.

I get that they are being cautious.. makes sense. But that should change pretty quick.

I do not care what he makes.

I'm hopeful and okay with the hire for now, but don't give this guy a lifetime contract or a ridiculous buyout.

This is utter incompetence on behalf of Mitch. I'm not sure where the information came from that he was making $2M at BYU. I'd be SHOCKED if BYU paid him anywhere close to that. BYU athletics is usually running in the red and doesn't have that kind of money to throw around. But regardless to pay a guy a top 6 salary in the country for never winning a conference in his lifetime, anywhere....just dumb.

He was making 2 million at BYU. 3 to 3.5 would of been all that we needed to pay. Of course Mitch overpaid like he does with everything else. Our football coach is paid like a top 10 coach and rarely finishes a season ranked in the top 25.

I thought I read he made 3-3.5 my apologies if not. I still believe we had to pay at a level that the job projects at the very least. That’s why it’s this number.

Also you're crazy if you think that saving 5mil on the coach CANT be somehow laundered into NIL money. I'm not saying it will (mitch does dumb ****).. but it absolutely can be done.

Everyone in KY wants to see UK win.. not a lot of people are going to give a **** if the athletic department uses some of that on NIL, if they chose to.

Actually, I found out this morning that we only offered Hurley $8.5M. My source is a major booster who had dinner with Stoops last night. When Mark was hired, Stoops said "Who the hell is that?"

No one knew who Hurley was when he went to UCONN, nobody knew who Oats was when he went to Bama. Nobody knew who Donavan was when he went to Florida or Golden, Pearl and many others now coaching. A new coach is a crapshoot, let's hope we roll a 7 and not snake eyes.

He just saved nearly $40 million between the buy out and Popes salary. No complaints here

How is Mitch overpaying Mark Pope? He’s accomplished nothing and is paid more than Scott Drew, Dan Hurley, Nate Oates, and Chris Beard.

Does Mitch realize you can negotiate contracts?
Does the money come out of your pocket?

I’d like to know where this money is coming from? The school cannot directly contribute to NIL.
Doesn’t come from the fans, it has to come from “the boosters” also known as Joe Craft, the only booster who matters.
