First quarters against p4 opponents 21-13 (how many fgs have we bypassed? 2?)
2nd 47-31
3rd 7-45
4th 44-16
What happens at halftime? At least our strength and conditioning seems to have substantially improved. But this won't work in November let alone the rest of the season. We did start 5-1 last season too. I'll be happy with 8-4. On paper we should get to 10 but the head scratching third quarters, turnovers and inability to shut down the run probably gives us 9-3.
It may be a silly notion, but we may want to consider coming out of halftime and try 15-20 scripted plays that are slightly different than the play calls on the fly in the first half? Maybe we need to speed up the play calling or slow down the play calling, or possibly less shotgun and more under center.
Maybe back to back bubble screens and things that we can do well we just don't do them often enough. Maybe run a few plays where you get their defensive personnel on the field you want, then run those scripted plays one after the other so the defense can't make any adjustments with substitutions on the fly.
Things like that.
By halftime, we've already figured out what has been working, unfortunately the opponent DC's have also figured it out. Clearly, whatever we are doing in the 3rd quarter is not working.
Generally, in that 3rd quarter scoring discrepancy, losing that quarter by an average of 11 points
(45 points divided by the 4 p4 opponents) should be enough to get you beat in competitive games, but if that 4th quarter reverses to a neutral or a slight NU edge, it's gonna result in some losses.
