Leaving aside that a W is all that matters or that it would be preferable to win 59-0 or such, if you had to pick, which of the above would you prefer as the final score against Albany and why?

24-0 because this team needs a great defense to have any chance of doing well this year.

IMO what I want to see more than anything is a fast start. Sure they scored 40 points in the open last year - but only 6 of them came in the first half. I can’t remember the last time Iowa came out in an opener and just laid the hammer down right in the first quarter. A 4 or 5 TD 1st half would indicate to me that the overall talent on the offensive side is truly superior to what we’ve seen the past 5 seasons.

Problem is, shutting out Albany wouldn't necessarily indicate a tough D. They stink. Not scoring more than 24 would raise red flags about the O.
Neither of these outcomes would be good but if the 21 was given up by late game subs I think the 45-21 outcome might be better. Phil has a way of getting things tightened up

The 45-21 score is much more realistic, imo, than 24-0, because I think this is going to be our worst defense in quite some time. Maybe even worse than 2014 and 2012.

It's Albany for Christ's sakes. Either one of these would be a total head scratcher. The only way either one of these scores should happen is if a whole lot of weird plays go against Iowa. Think special teams mistakes or some bad/fluke turnovers where the score doesn't reflect the huge disparity in total yardage.

It should be 49-0 at the half, at least. And a final at least in the sixties would be OK. Gronowski and SD State beat Albany 59-0 a couple years ago! Iowa scoring less than in the high sixties would be very disappointing. Gee whiz, people, it's Albany.

KF would've scheduled City High instead of Albany, but they wanted too big a guarantee. Frankly, I'd be embarrassed to play Albany. Not exactly the days of Hayden Fry when the Hawkeyes played top ten and top twenty teams to open the season. How do you think KF and the Hawkeyes would do if they opened with #6 Notre Dame on Saturday and, two weeks later, played #8 Alabama? Well, in 1981, for only one of many examples, Hayden's Hawkeyes opened with a 10-7 win over #6 Nebraska and then beat #7 UCLA, 20-7, in the third game of the year. Not exactly Albany and UMass.

And when Hayden did play lesser teams, he beat them to a pulp. None of this KF baloney about hurting somebody's feelings.

So you don't like facts and evidence to back them up? You have a lot of company these days. You'd do well in the dictator's regime, especially since you seem to be both young-ish and not so bright. Just IMHO, of course. And THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER.
I sent that because you went on a rant about scheduling and how you feel about KF v Fry, which is completely unrelated to the question asked in this thread. You then doubled down on your off-topic ranting by bringing up Trump and making a personal insult. So thank you for proving my point.

As to Iowa scoring 49+ points tomorrow……don’t get your hopes up. Kirk doesn’t run up the score. I would be surprised if there are any starters still in the game once the 3rd quarter is half over. Lots of backups will be playing and very few passes in the second half.

First game of the season, the defense should be "on their game" more than the offense.

Low scoring in the first game is more understandable than porous defense.

So I totally agree that running up the score is anathema to Kirk, but disparity and depth matter. Iowa SHOULD be able to run the ball even when the opponent is expecting it, and the backup QB needs to throw the ball against live competition. If Iowa is what we hope, they SHOULD have 24+ points on the board by halftime. 40+ is likely with a chance for 50 total.

Albany gives up a ton of points i.e. sucks at playing defense. If we only score 24?? No, no thanks.

I'd rather our defense be a bit rusty in game 1 b/c Phil is smart enough to get it straightened out in a hurry. We all know this.

The more the football enters the endzone, the more exciting the game!

Run up the f**king score when given the opportunity! Let Lester take ownership.
