Yes, but we are still 44th ranked in the nation and 15th in the SEC. Only the most sycophant among us would not say that is pathetic. The only reason Teasley was kept on was because of his recruiting prowess. Evidently there is no one on staff who is a strong recruiter. What you ideally want is someone who is good at both coaching and recruiting. They don't have to be great, just good at both phases. With NIL, I don't expect great recruiting classes. "Good" would be good enough. Even "decent" will be good enough if they can "coach".Iveon Lewis.
seems to be a good pickup.

No, you are not wrong. But you still will have freshmen who can be contributors to your team's success (Toney of Miami, Finney of Oregon). Besides, we were 29th in the portal ranking last year and 11th in the SEC. We did not exactly stand out in the portal last year either.Am I wrong in just not caring about highschool recruiting and just interested in who we pull in from the portal?
I think you have to do both at least passably well. The portal seems to be a good way to plug holes in a roster for mid level programs like SC, but I don't think a team like SC is going to become top tier through the portal. There isn't enough money available to go to the portal and buy top talent over an entire roster.Am I wrong in just not caring about highschool recruiting and just interested in who we pull in from the portal?
I think that's true. I said in another thread that NIL has tempered my expectations. But, I think we can still be a Top 20 program. With good coaching, you can make noise in the college football world. We will never win the national championship or even the SEC. I think "tough out", make the Clemson rivalry a real rivalry, make a bowl game every year and have a big upset every now and then is gamecock football's best realistic hope.I think that's true. all things being equal, I'd certainly rather be ranked higher than lower in HS recruiting, but I just don't think it makes much sense for SC, or any other program with a budget (which is all but about 5 schools), to invest much time in trying to recruit the top HS players in this new model. With very few exceptions, even highly rated freshmen aren't going to see much playing time. It doesn't make sense to pay them significant money to sit on the bench this year only to transfer somewhere else at the end of the season. There is no more "development" of players for the future. You have to spend your money on players who can make significant contributions now.
I don't like it one bit, but that's the way it is.
Michigan's entire starting 5 were transfers.Indiana and Oklahoma just won NC with mainly portal players. I don't keep up with MBB so I can 't tell you about Michigan. That seems to be the way. Sucks for HS kids. Go Juco and start your recruitment after that.
It's probably high past time to stop calling players a "flip".
In the good old days when a player committing was at least a fairly strong indication he would actually be coming to your school, the term "flip" made some sense. These days a commitment means absolutely zilch. With the advent of social media, some players actually commit to a certain program simply to increase their social media following and then "flip" later to increase it even more.
Much of recruiting has become a social media game. Maybe all of it.
Even though the vast majority of initial commitments stick, the threat of a "flip" is always out there now, such that coaches have to continue recruiting committed players.
one of the most accurate comments I have read in this forum in my opinion.I think you have to do both at least passably well. Thank God Teasley is no longer on this staff, one of the worst OL coaches in the country, he sucks!Seems like losing Trasley and Sterling Lucas has negatively affected recruiting, but it seems until NIL is equal to majority of teams in the league recruiting will be difficult.
