Wouldn’t this have been a safe way to get that second off the clock? We see it under the baseline from time to time. Is there any rule from intentionally throwing the ball off the player right in front of the inbounds passer?

I wouldn’t recommend that. Chance that ball could bounce off the Purdue defender and hit the inbounder while standing on the sideline. Would result in Purdue possession, similar to the travel
They had the right strategy to throw a baseball pass to other backcourt. Just don’t move your feet next time.
But there is only .4 seconds left so it doesn't matter. It would waste a couple tenths minimum. I said the same thing. Edey is an impossible target to miss too
The worst thing that can happen there is to travel or throw the ball untouched out of bounds. Throwing it with the intention of Edey tipping it would be the best idea. He could never collect and shoot that quickly.
0.4 is essentially a tip or nothing chance.
He could have just handed the ball to Edey.
You're also at the mercy of the official on the clock. Could get thrown off guard and be a few tenths of a second late which would allow Edey to throw up a prayer. Odds are very low he hits it but I think throwing the Hail Mary is the most efficient way to run the clock out.
You don't throw it high for Edey to tip it. If you are going to throw it off him fake a high throw so he jumps then throw it off his leg.
By the time Edey figured out what happened, buzzer.
I would throw it off his chest, you are not going to miss that. Just need to get out of the way.
100% there is no way 0.4 seconds does not run off the clock if he does that by the time the ball hits him and goes out of bounds

that would have been good you don't have enough time to shoot the minimum is 0.6 seconds he would have had to turn face the basket and shoot no way you do that in 0.4 seconds
I know theres a rule, like you can't throw it off his head or something on purpose, but I was screaming to just hit him in the gut. No way in .4 he reacts, gets the ball and shoots it to win it. Worst case scenario it bounced and hit caleb but time would have ran out
Purdue had no timeouts left. As others have said, Caleb could have just tossed the ball to Edey.
The baseball pass is risky because Edey can block it. An easy toss off the side of his somewhat massive foot and the ball rolls harmlessly away.
Just throw it high in the air towards the Purdue basket. As soon as a player touches it the game is over

i think there is too much overthinking about inbounding, have guys long but geez just inbound to a guy right there, we needed to have one guy at least nearer to midcourt

As far as I can think, the optimal play is:
Line up four guys under their basket to make sure the ball doesn’t go out of bounds without getting touched. Throw the ball towards their basket. If they go to get it you don’t need to even stop them, they won’t be able throw a full court heave that fast.

Tossing the ball right to Edey would have made a great/funny highlight too. Throw it up high so he's got to jump a little to get it.
But if you set a pick you must not move or the refs can call an O foul before the ball is inbounded and give Purdue the ball where Caleb was inbounding.
Clock doesn't start until the ball is touched. If you roll it across the court and it goes out without being touched they inbound from there. No time off the clock.

We can debate all the many ways to run this play but I feel confident in saying that there is no wrong answer here that would cost you the game except for walking up the sideline before inbounding the ball.
That might be the worst move.

Play worked fine as played. Gave us chance to tip inbounds pass. Got Reiber an important play...
Throw a sky high pop up towards Rutgers basket and make sure all our players just stand still hands at their sides ...no movement. Even if Purdue catches it cleanly there won't be enough time to shoot .

Pike will need to address this in future practices. The play can be titled "What do do when inbounding with 0.4 seconds left and up by a point on the #1 team in the nation (and some variations/see last year). Since this last second, beating a #1 team has become a tradition, it might be worth working on for the future.
I’m not saying set a pick. Just throw the ball towards Purdue’s basket. Even if they catch it clean the game is over.
