But the game always evolves. If you've been watching the playoffs, you see the teams with the best mid-range game have done very well this post season. Durant, CJ McCollum, and Kawhi Leonard, are all excellent at the mid-range jump shot. These players are taking what the defense is giving (the least efficient shot), but can make it at a rate that doesn't make it a bad shot. Without the 3 point shooters stretching out the defense, these mid-range shots are much easier to defend.

One of the lessons of this year's playoffs is that you need a plan B when the 3s aren't falling. The teams with good mid-range shooters were able to survive cold spells from 3 point range.

If you play the game as intended you eliminate the 3 point shot. 3 pointer is a gimmick to get people more interested.

Can you imagine awarding more points for a longer FG in football or a longer TD play.

Awarding golfers for longer putts?

The goal for basketball is to get the closest shot. Awarding 3 points for long shots goes against what the game is supposed to be about.

And this is the difference between Elite teams and very good. When 3s aren’t falling in Game 7 of the playoffs, you need a guy to get a basket.
Philly had Butler and Toronto has Leonard.
Denver had Jokic and Murray and Portland had Lilliard and McCollum.
Last year Boston had rookie Tatum and Cleveland had LeBron.

Houston doesn’t have a great plan B.
Their Plan A is great and makes them a Top 5 team in the regular season.
Unfortunately they keep running into the #1 team who has Kevin Durant as a Plan B.

To bring this back to Rutgers - considering where we are just having a very good Plan A in the regular season is enough for now.

Keep it where it is. Reduce the diameter of the rim two inches. In two years kids will adjust to the added distance, this not so much.

During the regular season, what Harden and the Rockets do looks almost unstoppable at times. Doing it against different random teams in the course of the regular season is one thing. Doing it against one team in a best of seven series is quite a different thing.
