So, perhaps this has been discussed extensively on the board but if so I missed it. Over the years I have continued to see failure in the 3-man pass rush. It's so frustrating to see the quarterback sit back in the pocket with no pass rush until he finds an open receiver in the zone coverage.

I understand if you want to use that at the end of a half/game when the QB needs to throw 30+ yards into the end zone.

It can be effective when you mix your looks. I'm not a fan of sitting in a three-man rush too often. One thing that shouldn't happen to you in a three-man is getting beat deep, and that happened a couple of times in the championship game.

This is my opinion of the three-man rush:

You can use it occasionally. Better yet is when you line up four and drop one back. We got some interceptions this way

It says ChicagoCat, but there is a UK logo for the avatar. I'm confused.

I'm from the area and am a UK grad '84 so the avatar related more to my time on their board. I've been an NU fan since the dark ages. Both parents are NU alumni and I worked there for three years. My mother and great aunt had over 50 years of service to the university.

Yes, this has been discussed extensively in the past. I continue to find it frustrating. I think it only really works if you have some particularly creative scheme to get pressure with 3, or a dominant pass rusher that can be relied on to beat a double team. Which we haven't had. Otherwise, over the years, there have been far too many times we've given up 3rd and longs when using the 3-man rush. It was evident in the OSU game (2 long TDs vs the 3-man rush on 3rd and long), and also against Illinois on multiple occasions (where it could have been far worse if not for 2 notable drops from wide open U of I WRs). I think Hank tends to use it when he is concerned about his coverage guys, where we were depleted by injuries this year, but in effect the marginal impact of a 4th pass rusher (the difference in 4DL v 5OL vs 3v5, or even worse 4v6 vs 3v6) tends to be higher than the marginal impact of an 8th guy in coverage (the difference in 5WR v 7DB vs 5WR vs 8DB).
