I think Belt was trying to take the ball because he saw the hole and Smothers didn't want to give it to him. That is one of the problems with the option at times and it is usually where fumbles happen.
Belt was in the mesh to quick. Smothers didn’t even have time to reach ball back to be able to ride the mesh to make a read. As soon as Smothers began to reach back Belt was running by him. Having so much success w/ Iowa taking RB Smothers may have assumed it would happen again. Not idea but the play started negative when they didn’t have a clear mesh ride like you have to have when reading defenders. Regardless, QB is held reliable for the ball not to be on the ground.
