ENJOY! I got to do that too but in my son's case he was third generation. It was a blast for me at at orientation. The cowbell had been bought LONG before that though.I graduated in ‘87. This Friday I’m taking my daughter to Orientation for her first year at State. Proud Dad to say the least. Hitting The Lodge Thursday afternoon to buy her first cowbell.
He didn't get mine. That is a priceless heirloom as frr as I'm concerned. It was split on the bleacher in front of me when DICK SHAFTER PACE threw that damn flag my freshman year. It had it welded back and it served for a long time. It split again at Croom's Liberty Bowl. I had it welded again but it split again at the next game I took it to. That bell was given to me by my MSU fanatic Aunt and Uncle to ring at the 1980 Egg Bowl, my first, that they took me to. I retired it after that last split. I've carried three others since then. The first I presented to a grandson of a beloved mentor of mine after I had rung it at the mentor's funeral. The second was a cheap piece of crap I still, have, sans clapper. The third I still have. I ran outside after the final out at the CWS ringing my current one for noise, and the original one. The muted thuds from the original meant everything to me. My son will get all three when I'm gone. I don't care what he does with the newer pair. I hope he will pass on the original to HIS kids. Why not give her yours?
My neighbor at one point had a third or fourth generation cowbell. It was so old they didn't sell them. So it was a brass bell and the handle was a sawed off barrel of a 20 gauge shotgun. The name of every one of his forbearers was engraved on it. That's when I fell in love with the idea of family heirloom cowbells.
