Amazing but one thing that has made a huge difference is the track surface.

Not only that, but the technology in the spikes these days is amazing. Kerr also has year round professional coaches and tech at his disposal, a pacer making sure his splits were on target, and other world class milers pushing him in this race. Roger Bannister didn't have any of that.

But he still had to run faster over that distance than anyone in history and it's an unbelievable acheivement. He called it all year leading up to this race too, which is pretty cool.

Training is so much advanced now days also with all of the tech knowledge also. Competition like you stated is another plus.

With all of the crazy advantages today, it makes the previous record even more impressive. I doubt this record will stand anywhere near as long as before. Hocker, Nuguse, or even Kessler could break it.

You're talking the 'metric mile'... 109 meters short of a true mile, but yes that is run more in official events.

1600m is what's run in high school, which is what I was talking about. Makes it easier for the volunteers to set up and monitor, having it be exactly 4 laps around the track and start/finish at the same line. It's also 100 meters closer to a full mile, which is why the 1500 always confused me.

The best part about the 1500 is you can puke 100 meters sooner. Otherwise, both of those distances are hell to race.
