In theory it would work. The legislators who thought it up didn't anticipate a cult taking over one of the major parties. It's the same thing with impeachment. The Founders anticipated a scalawag might take office, they just couldn't fathom a world in which the good men of the House and Senate wouldn't throw the scalawag out.
