What I always find crazy is that the Hidlay brothers grew up just 30 minutes outside of state college. I was in high school with the oldest brother. A lot of us were surprised when he announced he was not going to PSU like the majority of students do.
Hayden went to NC State because some Jason Nolf guy was at his weight.
PJ mentions he still has school on Monday, which is his last day of HS : ) He also mentioned he will be arriving at Penn State on June 28. Crazy to think that had PJ not won that challenge in match two he ultimately loses 11-0 and Yianni is heading to the World Championships. That was some serious composure by PJ to come storming back from that 9-2 deficit. And to have that composure as an 18-year-old HS Senior is just crazy! Yianni must be beside himself that he didn't finish out match #2.

3 Penn State wrestling takeaways from Final X: PJ Duke shines and more
Penn State wrestling was well represented at Final X on Saturday in Newark. Here are our final takeaways from the event.
Didn’t love the ref calls in the Messenbrink match. Flipped Carr for at least 2 and then the ref called injury risk (when Carr put himself in the position) was a match-changing call and the wrong one
I didn't like it at the time either. But you gotta protect the athlete as an official. No where does it say don't protect him if he puts himself there. And Carr definitely put himself there. Not a situation any Penn St fans will agree with no doubt about that. But once an athlete is hurt in that situation everyone will say man that ref should've stopped that. The refs are in a tough position in those situations
P.J. Duke could be youngest U.S. men's freestyle wrestler at world championships in 50 years

Nine Penn State wrestling representatives earn national team spots at Final X
Current Penn State wrestlers, two Nittany Lion Wrestling Club (NLWC) members and a future Penn State starter competed at Final X for a starting spot on the U.S. National Team.
Well the gap ain't the grand canyon. Those were both extremely close wins that could easily have gone the other way.

- Do you think the referee gave YD too much courtesy time?
- Have you ever had something like this delay ever happen in the matches you refereed? If yes, do you give a warning, a point deduction? What is the penalty for a deliberate non injury delay?

I'm not a freestyle ref, and don't know what the rules are for the situation about which you're asking. And unlike college (I'm not a college ref, but I know the rules really well, and also am friends with several college refs that I can check with if I'm unsure of a call), I only know one freestyle ref. I've talked with him at folkstyle meets we both reffed at, as well as at training sessions for folkstyle refs, but I'm not friendly enough with him that I have ever texted him or e-mailed him, so it's not easy for me to get the insights of a ref that knows the freestyle rules.
It appears that Yianni and his coach were discussing whether to throw a challenge brick. In college, there are challenge bricks, and we've seen situations in college where a wrestler has a quick conversation with their coach about throwing a brick.
In high school (which I ref), there are no challenge bricks. So I rarely encounter a situation where after a stoppage a wrestler is just sitting there discussing things with their coach, and making no effort to return to the center for the restart. In high school, if faced with a situation like that, the ref should signal for stalling, which is either a warning or a point (if a prior stall warning was issued).
