Still a really frustrating loss because I don’t think Arkansas is any better than us. This was the third loss this season where we have outgained our opponent by 100+ yards and still come up short.

Offense: B- thanks to the slow start. 0 points on your first four possessions ain’t going to cut it against a quality team on the road. Credit to them for adjusting though. The final six possessions we scored four TDs and had two makable FG attempts. Will Rogers is coming into his own, but we have got to start coming out and executing. Spotting our opponents double digits is killing us.

Defense: C-… Arnett was great in this game a year ago, but Kendall Briles got the better of him this season. Arkansas’s offense was more physical than us, which is unusual for our defense and also disappointing. We need to get the edge back, because Auburn is going to try to push us around too. The lack of a pass rush is killing us. We have stayed relatively healthy this season, but Jordan Davis and Brandon Ruiz injuries have costed us games. Which brings me to…

Special Teams: D- and the lack of a coverage bust is all that’s keeping this from being an F. I’m not ready to fire Brock, because we were really good on ST last season and he did a good job there at WSU. But we have to make big strides and find a kicker/punter this offseason. This unit has been terrible all year.

Officiating: If you listened to Charlie Winfield on OOLF, those are basically my exact thoughts. I disagree with the holding on Emerson but understand it. However, if you are going to call that, you cannot swallow the whistle when Wheat is getting held like crazy. That one was much more egregious. Then the missed false start was obvious. Those two missed calls were much bigger issues than the defensive holding, and totally changed the complexion of that drive.

We have a segment of fans who want to blame officiating every time we lose, and they are wrong. We also have a segment of fans who want to be internet badasses and call everyone who criticizes officials soft, and they are also wrong. As Charlie says, yes we made mistakes in this game that costed us, but that doesn’t disqualify us from expecting fair officiating on the last drive. We can point out our own failures of the players/coaches (which I’ve done) while also acknowledging that refs impacted the game on the final drive. It’s not an either/or mutually exclusive proposition.

All in all, I don’t really take anything big picture away from that game. We lost a coin flip game on the road to a quality SECW opponent. It’s disappointing but it happens. I think we have just as good of a shot to beat Auburn as we did Arkansas, and the bookmakers agree. Should be another good game Saturday.

Will Rogers and others put us in position all game to win the game and while the offensive units had some shortcomings it should piss them off that they put us in position to win and it was blown not once, not twice, but three times.

There’s not much new for the fans to take away from the game except the lack of size and/or physicality in the front seven. They are disruptive but they do not physically outmatch the players in the top third of the conference.

Everything else was par for the coarse. Special teams has been bad all season and has cost us every game except Bama. The officials blew a few calls but the team still had every opportunity to win and they didn’t get it done. Maybe the coaching staff learned some things and make better decisions before the next game.

We have no pass rush. To take the next step, we've got to get some dudes on the LOS

This is what you need to consistently win in this league.

Also, one of the biggest takeaways from the Arkansas game is how much our DBs got pushed around. They could could not shed any of their blocks and were easily handled all game. Any run or pass out into the perimeter I noticed the ARKY WRs were manhandling the DBs.

We have plenty of dudes in the middle of our defense that can stuff the run. We need to be better on the edges- both against the run and rushing the passer. Arkansas didn’t really gash us in the middle, but they got the edge whenever they wanted. We have missed Spencer and Kobe Jones, and Jack Harris has been MIA for a couple of weeks (not sure if that’s injury, suspension, or COVID).

Wheat has been okay this year but he needs help. Ty Cooper, John Lewis, and Demonte Russell need to step up big time next season, and getting a healthy Jordan Davis will help.

We lost a close road game to a good team. The mistakes we made were pretty characteristic of a young-ish team playing on the road. I'm not terribly worried about it, and in general I don't feel like we played that bad outside of special teams. Outside of the Bama game, we've looked like a very competent team since halftime of the LSU game and I look forward to seeing how we fare against Auburn and Ole Miss. Both games are winnable, would really like to see us get at least one of them just to give further validity to us being on an upward trend.

Agreed. We are 2 bunk *** calls away from being a 7 win team. I can live with that.

Will is getting better and better. Some of those passes deep at the end of the game were some of the best I have ever seen at Miss State.

This is not the year for us to really put a full season together but its been much better than I thought it would be, still sucks seeing games decided by dumb *** officials though. It's bad for the SEC brand and bad for NCAA football.

Players put in years of blood sweat and tears and work like hell to get better every day. Then you have the officials that perform consistently at an unprofessional level and nothing is ever done about it, yet they determine the success of the players.
