The goal should be top half of the conference and a bid. If Geo comes back, which is probable and a big comes in from the portal it is doable and here is my top 5 in conference:

Michigan- so much talent staying and more coming in.Could contest for National Championship.

Purdue- was the best young team in conference and Ivey is staying.

OSU- Very few defections likely.

MSU- Great incoming class and enough staying.

Maryland- If Wiggins stays, top 10 in country possible with the portal kids of today. Turgeon an excellent recruiter and salesman.

We will be better than Nebraska, Northwestern, Minnesota, Penn State, and Indiana. The question is how much higher can we rise above that?

Give me back Geo, get Harrar from PSU, and a decent backup to Cliff. If there are no other defections, we can be as good as last season. Losing MJ and Young hurts but the rest of the roster should get better.

Not sure I would push Purdue over Maryland, Ohio State or Michigan State on overall talent but Purdue is a tournament team. The Boilers need a better PG to do real damage in the bigger picture.

RU with a mobile 4/5 who can rim protect and rebound is a NCAA caliber team for the 3rd year in a row. I believe in the player development aspect of the program as much as the worrying about what the rest of the league does.

Wisconsin, Iowa and Indiana on paper, usually do enough in recruiting to be right there.....Wisconsin loses the most to graduation of that group. Geo back at RU is probably as critical as Wiggins returning to Maryland as far as confidence and leadership.

Jaden Jones will be phenomenal next year. Mark my words.
Yea I think it’s telling that we’re not targeting many portal guards. Seems like the staff fully expects Jones to slot into the rotation and be capable of making a two-way impact from the jump. He’s obviously not a like-for-like replacement for JY but between him and the trio of Mulcahy/McConnell/Mathis it appears the staff knows how we’ll make up minutes at the guard spot. This isn’t to say the staff doesn’t pick up a guard should the right one come along — but it doesn’t seem like a priority right now

Even with the right parts I still believe the hunger is key. They lost something the second half this season and we didn’t witness that hunger until the houston game. Its not like the top half of the conference recruits worse than us

Despite what some fans think I actually believe we suffered from a lack of leadership last year. The team felt it was invincible — and played like it — until the OSU game. The season was very ordinary thereafter. Sure, the schedule got more difficult but we had the talent and still didn’t much after early January.

I’m in the minority ...but I really think we can better than this year with Jaden and cliff replacing Jacob and Myles. The stats (I.e the ppg ) will get replaced for sure.

Better leadership in 21-22 and more consistency from geo and Ron

I don’t see us finishing much higher than the last two years record in conference ...so its a question of what we do in March

way too early in the big ten feels like the top grouping will be as RU72 says ...Michigan, Michigan state, Purdue, Maryland and Ohio state (no order) in the top 5

and bottom five...in no order of Nebraska, Indiana, Northwestern, Penn state and Minnesota

that leaves us in the mid group of Rutgers, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois ....

This is 100% accurate and was a huge factor in our struggles last year. We are a BAD rebounding team last year for the first time since Pike got here. That is 100% due to a drop in effort, passion and desire.

What caused it? The #11 ranking? Bloated egos? Chemistry issues? IDK but if we find that again next year we'll be dancing again.

I think people are underestimating the loss of Myles. We really need a very good big man from the portal to offset his loss.
Myles is an old school NBA 5 and there are few of any like him in the country. Too bad the BIG refs didn’t see that and cost us 2-3 wins.

Rebounding had a lot to do with lineups. Ron Harper is a much better rebounder than Paul Mulcahy. Last year a lot of lineups were Myles Yeboah Harper. This year Myles Harper Paul.

Paul doesn’t rebound enough. When Caleb was in instead of Paul our rebounding was better because Caleb rebounds defensively.

Rebounding ....

While Swidel was 6’9 225...he was NOT enough of a rebounder at the four in three years at Villanova to play the way pike wants to play

Getting a back up center and a combo forward that can bang and step out and shoot some (yeboah type) is the portal priority

Yeboah was a strong rebounder, and contributed on the offensive glass, and was missed... but it wasn't just the Yeboah/Mulcahy switch. Young rebounded far less this year than last, and Harper/Baker/Mathis/Mulcahy had fewer rebounds per 40 min than last year.

Looking at change in RB/40 year over year for players who saw at least 100 min:
McConnell: 7.5 vs. 7.0 (+0.5)
Johnson: 13.8 vs. 13.4 (+0.4)
Mulcahy: 4.9 vs. 5.3 (-0.4)
Mathis: 5.3 vs. 6.1 (-0.8)
Harper: 7.3 vs. 8.2 (-0.9)
Baker: 3.9 vs. 4.2 (-0.9)
Young: 2.5 vs. 5.0 (-2.5)

Newcomers:
Omoruyi 10.6

Departed players:
Carter 8.2
Yeboah 8.1
