You may've already seen that Cornell has listed the Soldier Salute on its schedule for this season:

2026-27 Wrestling Schedule - Cornell University Athletics

However, for those reticent to get their hopes up that the Big Red will be sending a strong squad to Coralville, I was told today by reliable source that it's fully expected to be a starter-heavy lineup - featuring as many as 15 total entries.

If Iowa does its share this time around, we really could have quite the tournament on our hands.

Were not going to national duals this year wonder if that will help with sending more of our starters
Given that the two events were 1.5 months apart last year I’m not really sure that was the impetus behind Iowa’s lackluster entry list.

However, that could be part of why Cornell is attending the Solider Salute this year - as they, like Iowa, will not be at National Duals (December 12-13).

That makes sense. I was just think National Duals made the early part of the season much more tuff the iowa state dual was only a few weeks after could be wrong though

Surprised some of Midlands entrants don't change to SS. Seemed Hawks were the draw while there and Midlands is going downhill.

Why aren’t we doing national duals this year? It is an awesome way to build excitement for the sport.

Odd take. ND is in November. SS is in January.

Need a couple more schools to send starters (including Iowa) and it's officially a good tourney.
The more I think about it. It is odd with NDI and them moving the date of SS Im not sure why they didnt send more guys last year hopefully this year we see more of the starters for the hawks!

I don't think it is an odd take. Having to get your starters up to speed a month and a half earlier is significant when you look at it from a full season perspective.

And that has nothing to do with an event 6 weeks later.
Sure it does - same concept as why teams don't want their pitchers involved in the World Baseball Classic that takes place early in Spring Training. Getting into competitive condition earlier than necessary is not ideal for the long run. Iowa can put that off for several weeks at the minimum. Try to think a little bigger picture.

Iowa has always been ahead of the curve for conditioning early in the season. Has that practice changed recently?

But we are taking about the SS. Saying we can’t possibly wrestle starters there due to an event 6 weeks prior is loco.

Have you not been watching Iowa wrestling the past several years? Our early season conditioning is not very strong.

Well - I guess the alternative is to get in prime condition earlier in the season, maintain it through another pre-season tournament 6-weeks later, start the regular season in prime form and maintain it all the way to the end, and then let the experts ***** and moan that the starters are beat up when it matters most. Think about that. Have you given it one second's thought that if they don't go to the National Duals they can start to gear up for the season just a bit later and now send their starters to the Soldier Salute? Or maybe to satisfy the late season injury bitchers, go to the National Duals out of shape and then this group can take their turn bitching and moaning about that. Can you wrap your head around how conditioning works?

Meh, didn't seem to effect Oklahoma State at all last year.

One might even say that they were PEAKING at the NCAA tournament.

National Duals is in December this year, during Iowa Finals week, and that is supposedly why we aren't going. I thought I also heard the SS was going back to late December. Was I wrong about that? If we don't send our starters to SS this year, I'm not going again, unless it is considerably cheaper. I will break my streak of having attended all wrestling events in Xtream above HS age.

Correct, I believe it was discussed at length by an Iowa insider that this is the time they "hit their first peak" of the season. Unsure of when the second peak is, but that is the rhetoric from someone in the inner circle. 🤷‍♂️

Someone is getting old that conversation was about national duals not the Salute. You can only peak once in 4 months according to some 🤷 so don't expect any medals at the World championships in October after guys peaking for Final X 🤷

In the Gable days, we always peaked in March. We were seldom the best team in November, but always were in March. When the National Duals were in January, we didn't win them often, but always beat those teams in March. We always had a hard training/conditioning phase during Winter break, then tapered at B1G time and peaked for B1G and NCAA tournaments. Haven't seen much of that peaking since 2000. We've won some, but NCAAs have usually not performed at peak.

That is still the best timing formula for a season imho. Light early schedule followed by ramping up during the B1G season with a hell week thrown in there somewhere to simulate tourney time and build "character". Then work towards B1Gs and Nationals in February with a "work on your weaknesses" month with a lighter schedule to prevent injury as much as possible.

They were strong at Natty's last year but don't know if it was conditioning or heart or both. But recent years prior, they have not peaked in March even when they won it in 21.

Would be great if we could get some of our recruits in the SS.
Paul Kenny and Isreal Borge I think have done some college opens I bealive could be wrong though. I dont think Dawson Youngblut can iowa high school rules won't allow if I remember right thats why kolby Franklin couldnt wrestle for iowa city high his senior year he went to a college open right before moving. If in town training at the time that would be cool not sure if that would happen though
