Has he indicated when he will announce?
No he has not given a timeline to my knowledge. We haven’t offered yet but we do like Will Wood and he is visiting PSU this week. Obviously not the same offer list as Bourque or Mencl, so likely a fallback plan or perhaps a second QB for the class.

This commitment would be huge for the program.

Unfortunately, that bump may make him unaffordable for PSU. That’s the unfortunate reality of things. We do not have an uncle Phil Knight that Oregon has or oil money like Texas Tech has. But maybe with a PA 5 star they can find other sources of NIL to pay him what he probably now commands.
Some of our actual commitments got bumps as well in the new rivals update fyi.

Fair points, but he talks very highly of Penn State in that interview.

They all do. Mekai Brown, an elite edge out of Connecticut, was glowing about PSU after his visit. He subsequently released a top 5 and we were not in it, shortly thereafter committing to USC. USC has been one of the biggest spenders over the last 12 months. It’s still extremely important to create relationships, but ultimately, for a lot of guys the money matters more than anything.

What are the thoughts about Wood getting an offer today? Staff held out last visit to not scare off PB or to show PB was THE guy. Now that’s changed and of course there’s a hysteria that PB will be signing elsewhere because of the offer. PB is done doing interviews but the staff did the best they could, so I guess time will tell.

JMO, if you believe what some of these guys are saying we are going to take upwards of 35 recruits. If that is the case, I'd have a second QB. I don't think it means anything, though I would think the coaches have a very good feel if they are getting Mencl at this point in time.

Let's say we get a commitment from Bourque and Wood in this class....We've all heard how this staff prefers a certain type of QB that fits into the Purdy, Becht and McSorley mold...Does Wood fit that mold better than Bourque? From what I've heard, the answer is Yes.

Thoughts?

Wood got a committable offer from PSU today. Mencl looks like he is Oregon-bound. Bourque has been shopping for the best offer. Even if he “commits” here, he may still be shopping until signing day. In Wood’s junior year, he had 42 tds and 1 int, and is closer to a McSorely or Becht mold of a qb. Bourque is prototypical NFL type build with a big arm.

My 2 cents ( not worth much) is that Bourque isn't sold on PSU. He continues to shop around for other offers, while knowing his best offer at the moment is PSU. As for the staff, I think they're content with taking Woods if Bourque continues to slowplay this recruitment, knowing that we have a solid backup in Manske. I also think the staff, given a full year in State College probably feels like they can really go after a 2028 QB if we miss on Bourque.

In other words, I think this staff feels like they don't have to overpay for a Top QB in 2027 and they're more than willing to take a developmental QB and then go after a Top QB in 2028. Also, I don't think Bourque fits exactly what we want in a QB. He doesn't appear to be as mobile as we'd like.

To clarify: We have offered Bourque but not Wood.

It would be nice to get Bourque and Wood. We have two QBs graduating after 2026 and need bodies in the room. It will be interesting to see if the new offer to Wood is able to generate a decision from Bourque. Whatever happens, it may not matter too much. It appears that modern QB development may favor the transfer portal over high school recruiting. Relatively few big-time QB recruits stay at their original school in this era.

I have absolutely no inside information but my gut says it is Wood that signs with us. From reading these comments is Mencl destined for Oregon? He announces this week and that would make sense he stays in the west. Bourque is shopping around and potentially this is what prompted Wood to move up on our priority. Perhaps there is an indication from the PB camp that we are slipping in his level of interest, just guessing of course.

As far as Sesay, don't see him becoming a Nittany Lion. The only thing on our side is that he is from PA but that doesn't mean much these days. I think OSU or a Georgia or a Miami (not sure if they are all in his final 5 or not) are all over him and re-upping at astronomical NIL offers. What would be the price range for a top EDGE, #16 player in the country accelerating up the rankings? $3 million, $4 million? Do we want to pay that? Would that make sense in the big picture knowing we could get a solid 4 star EDGE (not sure who but would think we could land this caliber player) at a much lower cost then use other money in the budget for other positions of need.

Getting a top level, seasoned QB in the portal would probably cost far more than a top level HS recruit.

Borque seems to be a PS-VT battle at this point. For now my money is still on PS.

I find Wood intriguing, a McSorley type who's just a little light in the seat of his pants at this point but the potential is definitely there. Wood be a good get IMO.

Man, so great to see PSU and Campbell eating James's lunch. VT ranked 45th for 2027 on 247 and PSU is 9th. Good job James!! You are not the thing. And never were. Love this. Will be shocked if VT cracks the top 30 this year.

Get off his jock-it’s posters like you who are so immature that you cant just move on. Why? Because he’s obviously a lot more appreciated and polarizing than your miniature schnauzer brain can understand.

No offense, but are you still salty about ex girlfriends in HS also? This is a poor take. You’re letting Franklin live in your head. VT is not who we should strive to beat out in recruiting. That’s low hanging fruit. I seem to be noticing a theme with many of the recruits PSU is getting. They have offers from VT, Pitt, Maryland, Syracuse, Rutgers, etc. and several aren’t even ranked in the top 20 of their own state. Many do not have offers from the big boys. Frankly, that makes me nervous. PSU needs to beat out schools like ND, OSU, Michigan, Oregon, and USC if we expect to beat them. I’ll say it again, OSU has commitments from 3 of the top 20 overall recruits in the nation. They have top notch coaching and they land top athletes at every position. Until we go toe to toe with them in recruiting, it’s going to be a big ask to beat them on the field. Campbell is a really good coach and developer, but talent wins out eventually. I like Campbell, I like his approach for the most part, but this is what I had trepidation about when he was hired. If ever there was a team that needs to have a really good season in 2026 and look really good doing it to get some momentum going, it’s PSU.
Common sense….on this board!?!?

He should be. PSU has way more resources than ISU. That’s the expectation. Beating OSU, Michigan, Oregon, and ND is now the measuring stick. Fair or not, he will be judged on whether he beats these teams on the field and that isn’t going to happen without top talent.
Add Indiana…yes, in 18-24 months we have literally dropped ANOTHER ladder on the rung. It used to be OSU and Michigan….now it’s OSU, Michigan, Oregon, and Indiana and that rung on that ladder is more slippery every day.

No offense, but not reading all this. F James. That is all. It’s college football - trying to inductively reason someone’s behavior or personal preferences based on message board talk is insane.
**** James? That’s all a smart man like you has? After what he did for the program? Guess what? If you think that’s all he deserves? First of all you’re a spoiled Penn State fan brat and you’re about to realize you had it pretty good with James Franklin. And I’ll use you’re tremendous vocabulary to suggest the following, “**** you.”

I agree he is very intriguing and would be happy with him, but I listened to the latest 247 podcast and Bourque is our number 1 priority. Sometimes those upper level qbs can help bring in other upper level recruits.
