Woohoo, the main draw starts today! Kind of. Last year they changed the schedule and format to bring more top singles players into mixed doubles. Doing it before the single tournament gets started, in the hope of bringing more people into the stands earlier on to see their favorite singles players.

Was not excited about this change last year. However, I am looking forward to seeing how double specialist Siniakova and Patten do against Djoko and Sabalenka.

I'm really torn on the reimagined Mixed Doubles...I have to admit that it does create a huge amount of interest and the fans seem to love it, plus it creates great gambling opportunities for me. But it's shutting out so many of those players that are doubles specialists and missing out on the opportunity to compete for a Grand Slam title. The qualifying tournament was a good thing to at least give more top teams a pathway to get in, so I applaud them for trying to get it right while maximizing $/eyeballs.

I may be alone in this but Wawrinka not getting a WC annoys me. It would be his last major, he's a former champion and still ranked 124.

As far as mixed doubles...it is a good way to get bigger names and more attention to the event but it does hurt the doubles specialists that rely on these bigger paydays.

Yeah that stinks about Stan the Man. He's won 3 majors and it's his last chance. Even Gael has gotten in, during his retirement year, as a French wild-card entry. He's had a nice career but no majors.

Can Djokovic just retire already? Jesus. Men's tennis is already 'meh' and he just keeps hanging around.

Some great play out of Patten to take him and Siniakova past Djoko and Sabalenka in mixed. Sabalenka played well but Djoko was off for the most part. Inconsistent serving.

They take on Gael and Svitolina within an hour. Should be fun. NY crowd loves Monfils.

Just announced that Stan Warwrinka will be given a wildcard entry. American Kypson, from Raleigh, had to withdraw thus creating the opening. Go Stan!!!
Sucks for Kypson but glad it worked out for Stan--his exclusion was unacceptable

Danil Medvedev crashes out in lead-up tournament in Winston-Salem to Martin Damm Jr of the US. Considering switching to pickleball LOL!

I thought Martin Damm's name looked familiar and sure enough he's the son of former Czech player by the same name.

Does anyone else just think it's absurd that "experts" continue to pick American men to win this major
Patrick McEnroe allegedly truly believes Shelton should be considered the/a favorite. I'd be less shocked if he went out in the first round than I would be if he won it.

Medvedev is hysterical--for starters, he couldn't care less what anything thinks about him. The "or even curling" just tells you how frustrated he is.

Mary Carillo and Roger were inducted into the tennis HOF last night. Watch Mary's hilarious speech (or at least the poem she wrote). Who knew she was so funny!

Can Sinner not cramp up? That is painful to watch. Cant wait to see Alcaraz. Speaking of can’t wait to see, I hope Emma Navarro’s thyroid disorder is doing better and her body snaps back, right now she looks like she ate Emma Navarro.

Novak Novak Novak...hopefully he plays one more year but last night was really bad

Not as bad as Venus though...she needs to stop taking these wildcard spots at this point.

Shelton dropped the opening set 6-1
I just don't see this "future elite" tennis player. Got a break to open the second so hopefully he turns it around

He just doesn’t have ‘it’. Like most American men. At one point we had Chang, Sampras, Agassi, Martin, Courier on the heels of McEnroe and Connors. Roddick was our last best hope and he retired to bed with Brooklyn Decker. All about American women now as it’s been for some time.

We’ve got 5 of the top 16 seeds….lots of guys playing pretty well right now.

Of those 5 (and I agree they're good players who are playing well) do you see any being elite? Fritz or Ben could win a major (I don't see multiple and I don't know if I can really see Fritz doing it). I have zero faith in Paul. Tiafoe or Nakashima. Tien is probably the best hope because of his age.

We were spoiled for a long time with truly great players. Sampras, Connors, McEnroe and Agassi but none of these guys seem to have that killer instinct or ability rise to the occasion. Sinner and Alcaraz are going to be likely be around for a while and young guys like Mensik, Jodar and even Fonseca that could become close to that level.

Hopefully Shelton proves me wrong--I just don't see it with him. Been wrong before though.

Meanwhile, the women--Pegula is the definition of consistent even without a major title and could be #1 (hopefully will be) at the end of the US Open. Cocu is inconsistent but has multiple majors. Anisimova definitely could win a couple if she figures it out mentally. Jovic is a fast riser at just 18. Keys has a major. Even Sloane and Kenin have majors. The women have definitely been far superior

Check off another player I'm always going to always root against. Atmane being a total jack-off to the physio. Arguing with the chair umpire I can understand, but not the tournament physical therapists. Complete anti-Roger attitude.

I thought the physio handled it well...better than I would have.
I get that he was frustrated because he was cramping. He knows the rules which is why he tried to then claim pain but everyone watching knew better. Desperate and unprofessional by him. Hope he learns from it.

Nice to see Stan the Man get a curtain call but that match was not good. Stan looked slow and out of shape. Good thing he's friends with Berrettini, who didn't play that great either, or it would have been ugly. I'll miss that backhand.

My favorite backhand of all time
The first two sets were relatively competitive. Stan probably should have won the second.
Stan did things the right way this year though....he played in a bunch of low level tournaments while keeping a decent ranking. Glad he got the WC he deserved. Also, like you said, glad it was against Berrettini and not Carlos or Sasha

Fun fact I just learned. Filipina sensation Alex Eala's brother played tennis at PSU. Her parents were not tennis player but her grandfather got them playing and she eventually went on to Rafa's tennis academy. Her brother, Miko, played at Penn State up to 2024. Also won her first US Open match last night. Like watching her.

What an a-hole. Men's tennis just can't get out of it's own way. It's already boring as f*ck, and then you add in La Liga level whining and why bother? Women's game so much better and interesting.

I have to admit I didn’t see “La Liga level whining” coming from you. Attaboy.

The last American to win the US Open was Andy Roddick, in 2003.

Just a PSA for the moderately engaged tennis fan, I myself hadn’t been aware.

I'm critical of the men...but Taylor was great today. Not an elite (or even good) opponent but he was dominant.

Zverev is lucky he was sent home in round one but he survived and now his path to the semis looks amazing if he can even play his B game.

Every single time they hail a young American man as the next big thing, they lose to a nobody, right on cue: Down goes Svadja, to something called "Gea" who I have literally never heard of. Nobody and NO TEAM disappoints quite like the American men. Failures for a quarter century now

It's no wonder every time I turn on ESPN they are covering a womans Match even though 3 American men are playing at the same time 😂
