That logo went through 86; at least some
good teams in the 70s wore it. This was the last logo before the current one…

This one I remember well. That was the Andy Van Slyke, Bonds, Bonilla, Drabek years. They were some really good teams. AVS was my favorite player at the time. I loved the way he played. Jim Leyland remains my favorite manager to this day. I even rooted for him when he was with the Tigers.

In the 70s, the Pirates won two World Series and made the playoffs in 1970, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975 and 1979; they were one of the THE best organizations in baseball in the 70s, when making the playoffs was much harder than it is now.

Also, from the late 60s into most of the 70s, the Pirates produced so many All Star caliber players that they could afford to trade really good players like Dave Cash, Willie Randolph, Al Oliver, Tony Armas, Mitchell Paige and others.

This is why is pains me for the Pirates to have ownership that isn’t fully committed to winning. The Griffin signing is a step in the right direction, but they need to put both feet in before I get too excited. The city of Pittsburgh and the Pirate fans are starving for success. It’s a baseball tradition rich city.

I don't think not being "fully committed to winning" will be the issue when it comes to Skenes. There are really only 4/5 MLB teams that can (currently) survive and thrive after paying a guy who plays every 5 days nearly $400 million dollars. The Bucs aren't one of those 4/5.

The actual numbers I've seen thrown around are pretty incredible. From another site, "$176 million in guarantees for two additional years" is the current projection.

I need to read more on this to understand it, but I read that the FO for the Pirates screwed up by bringing Skenes up when they did last season. He pitched very well, started the All Star game and won the Cy Young, but the Pirates lost a season of control by when he was called up.

They actually called him up in 2024 and he won Rookie of the Year; he won the Cy Young last season, which was his second season.

That - from wherever you heard it - is all nonsense. FWIW.
