According to the recruiting services, New Jersey has FIVE top 50 players in the class of 2023. Rutgers does not seem to be in the mix for any of them. That is a Pike recruiting failure . Schiano is doing a much better job of getting the top NJ talent. Different sport, but there is no way you can build a top basketball program if you can't recruit the talent in your home state. You have a $100 million practice facility, a rabid fan base, membership in the B10, a trip to the NCAAs. What else do you need?

Wagner was never coming here.

Wilchers seem to have 0 interest in RU (maybe some $$$).

Bradshaw, from my friend who coaches in NJ HS may have grade issues.

The other two idk

And there in lies the current issue with Rutgers MBB and WBB. The argument should be , “ no we don’t want to only recruit NJ but we should be getting some of them “. It appears we are not .Only in football and perhaps baseball have we had some significant recruiting wins in state . When you run an offense , especially in basketball and sometimes football, kids don’t get very excited .

A good number of these kids have no connection to NJ and are shuffled here to these Parochials and Prep schools because the competition is significantly higher than where they're originally from.

There are kids that are local and none of the local schools (Nova, SHU, SJU or RU) are getting these types of 1 and done or cash kids.....it is one thing if RU was the only local school not landing these kids

The program that is consistently involved with these types of kids is UConn, but UConn has a consistent reputation for being that type of recruiting program now under 3 separate coaching regimes (Calhoun, Ollie and now Hurley)....UConn is accumulating kids left and right at a Top 100 level, almost illogical to a certain degree because kids are being recruited over, one year at a time.....the only programs that consistently do this are UConn, Duke, Kansas (prior to NCAA sanctions), Kentucky, Oregon and UConn.....Michigan and others are close behind, but playing HS ball here is irrelevant to recruiting for basketball......it is not football ......

Go back to earlier years… there have been numerous very good NJ players to bigtime programs.

Pikes gonna do it his way. We know that. Taking chances on under recruited/ developmental kids is risky and sets you up for success only every few years. After this season, the roster will will severely lack enough talent because Of the lack of development for the current roster under recruited kids. Palmquist, Reiber, Mag, Miller...will anyone be surprised if none of these players make an impact ? Or transfer down ?

Something I find interesting is the miss rate of the top NJ prospects.

Scottie Lewis, Bryan Antoine, Trey Patterson, Jalen Carey, Jabri Abdul Rahim, Lance Ware.

Im probably missing even more but these guys were all consensus top 50 players. Some even top 20/5 stars. They’ve all accomplished a fraction of what Harper and even Cliff have.
